I had a TomTom app used with my iPhone and later retrofitted the RNS 510. From my experience, I would say, you cannot compare RNS 510 with any portable Nav systems.
RNS 510 is a fully integrated system that is connected to the CANBUS, which communicates with the rear wheels/ABS system for accurate speed measurement, displays the 'next turn/direction', compass, street names in the full MFD in the console, voice controlled etc. Also it has a 20GB HDD (30 GB total) for storing music, plays DVD video etc.

If you want a cheaper option, (as I did) you may buy it from UK/Europe and get it fitted by a VW service centre.

We have the RNS510 in out Tiguan 147. I think as far as in-car SatNav's go its one of the best on the market, but then I live BMW's idrive also, a lot of people hate that

    Pro
clear, simple, easy enough to use, visually looks good
not a bad price on the Tiguan
works well with the basic VW Bluetooth

    Con
slow to boot up when starting the car
not a lover of the media interface, its ugly (colours etc)
the way it plays mp3's (interface wise) isnt great
very slow to load content to the HDD or read from SD card
Map update costs are outrageous-you will essentially never update the maps
buttons on the unit that just dont work in Australia Ii.e. traffic)

Look, these are just my observations, others may not agree. Think long and hard about buying from the perspective of do you really need it; its a nice idea when your browsing the options list but I think in every day use for most people you just dont use it that often; a portable $200 unit pulled out of the glove box on the odd occasion you need it might be a better option for most people

I didnt order it on my GTI not beacuse I cant afford it, simply because I dont want it; I think the standard RCD510 is a great unit and has a better looking interface

Like I said, just my opinion
