    hi Corey_R

Thanks for your very clearly and useful advices. In my situation, my dealer told me I have to wait 6 mths to pickup the car, but why someone else like FirstGolfR have different timeframe which up to 9 mths? Or just my dealer rip me off on that? And It passed 2 mths from my ordered date, should i give him a email or call to ask about copy of the NADCON screen around mid of AUG even he told me I have to wait until SEP for VIN? What can I do if my order delay? I am stress on that coz my contract didn't write down any timeframe for
    proper pickup time.

    Cheers

    Joy

At that stage, you'll receive a confirmed build week and a VIN within a few weeks of each other. Once you have the VIN, about a month later, you'll be able to track the car on the shipping sites. You then have about two months of shipping and compliance and pre-delivery etc.

If the timeline is to be 6 months, then you won't have a real update for about 2 1/2 months etc. (that was my wait, I ordered on the day of release).
The best you could possibly hope for on a car to come from Germany is 4 months. But it doesn't sound like that'll happen with the R.

Don't bug your dealer for the next month, but then hit them up for a copy of the NADCON screens as per the 1st post. Then follow up the next month for new screenshots, and again a month later etc. There's no point stressing yourself by trying to get any more frequent updates than that. Once you've got the VIN, you don't need to talk to the dealer again until the car has landed. Takes ~3 weeks (+/- 1 week) for complaince and predelivery.

There are various reasons why one dealer might say 6 months and another dealer might say 9 months. In no particular order:
    • First and foremost, there is nothing which tells a dealer what the current wait times are. So even with a 100% honest dealer with no other conditions listed below, the stated time is a "best guestimate" based on the experience of the other cars they've ordered and received in recent months.
    • A dealer may already have a car in the system close to your config and they just change the spec slightly to suit your order. It's getting rarer though, as VAG have been cutting down on this as it ultimately only increases the "overall average wait time" for all customers.
    • Some dealers may be more eager to get a sale and play off the customers eagerness to get a car and may stretch the truth a little by underestimating. However, a 6 month guestimate is still a realistic possibility. If they told you 4 months, I'd have said they completely lied.
    • Some dealers may be a little more conservative if they believe the customer isn't in any rush to receive their car. So 9 months means there is little chance of it taking longer and disappointing the customer. In fact, it might only take 6 months and surprise the customer!

There are probably other reasons... but that's the gist of it.

If you've waited 2 months already, give them a call now and ask for the NADCON screens if you'd like (as per the 1st post... make sure you read that post, cause there are LOTS of NADCON screens, and I've given specific details about what to ask for in that 1st post).

The reason for asking for these things after about 1 month is:
    1) The "ETA Data" can give you a general indication of how long it will take. Although be warned that any dates beyond the "dot indicator" are estimates, and those dates will keep pushing out as necessary by any holdups in earlier steps.
    2) The "Car Configurator" page shows the option codes listed (this might take up two screenshots on a car with lots of options). This gives you the opportunity to ensure that the colours (paint, and interior where applicable) and options that you've purchased, are actually listed in the order and that no mistake has been made. Most orders will contain additional "option codes" which you haven't specifically selected, but are part of the standard Australian configuration. If you have any questions, ask here, or NICELY ask your dealer (I say nicely, because most of the time "pierced mistakes" are just the way the ordering is done). But occassionaly, an option which is paid for is missed off the order etc. Picking that up before a car is built is obviously advantageous.

Nice one, thanks for that info Corey. I think your advice about not stressing the dealer is solid. I've sent a couple of emails already and am self-conscious of being a nuisance. Mainly they're about specifications etc, although I did ask today for a bit of a guide as to what to expect over the coming months.

    Cheers mate.

Nah, I went with Cricks on the Sunshine coast. Got a great deal as they put me on fleet pricing. Having said that, I keep adding options so the price is rising.
