Whilst I think that Highlander has provided a plausible explanation of what "liner release" probably means, I just thought I'd comment on this line.
The Emma Mærsk is the worlds largest shipping vessel (ok, so it's 7 sister ships now equal her), but her speed is 25.5 knots (47.2 km/h; 29.3 mph). So given favourable wind/tidal conditions, it is definitely possible for these ships to do 50km/h

im even thinking of going down to the docks at 8am on the 4th to see it come in - is that bad?
Take a sleeping bag and some food. Today's ETA for Torino in Fremantle in now 5 August 2010
You know you are getting old when you cancel your order for a 3.6 CC and buy an Icelandic Gray TDI CC instead.

Someone here in the office has suggested that "liner release" might be a politically correct way of saying that it has fallen overboard. Hope they are wrong

My car is finally here and cleared customs within 3 days from docking
I checked it over at the dealer and it is still covered in film
It will be ready to pick up on Tuesday the dealer has been great to deal with
And is preparing the car for me in a reasonable amount of time.
Volkswagon Australia have let me and others down by not providing a more accurate
    Time of arrival.
From 3 months Eta it stretched out to 8 months

Hmmm.... 3 months is VERY optimistic. I would like to know how "VWA" are actually at fault here, since the dealers place the orders and that goes through to the factory etc. I think that at least part of the blame (all?) could be on the dealer for giving the estimate of 3 months when these things regularly take twice that.

You do know that the E in ETA stands for ESTIMATED?

And that the ETA was given to you by the dealer and not VWA?

They wouldn't be the first dealer to give bogus ETA's in order to get a sale so you might want to redirect your anger or just move on. If it was a confirmed time or guaranteed time you would have a reason to complain.

Even so 6 month or 8 months wait for car is too long VWA is responsible for providing an estimate on how many cars get allocated to built for Australia. Gathering by what iam hearing on wait times from other people the requirements are not been met to a satisfactory standard.
Yes VWA is responsible for this
