We bought a manual gti purely because we prefer then, and was happy to wait the 5 months to get trying to drive it. Have always had the thought that a dsg would have been nice, but drove one the other day, and that really put me off them. Changing gears manually is a real pain with any sort of angle on the steering wheel was a bit tricky i found. but it does sound good leaving it in auto when it changes gear.

That's what the left side gate is for - when you're crossed up and can't flappy paddle, use the + or - on the lever just like a manual

    Thanks all.

I started the ring around today and after two phone calls I had a selection between a manual or DSG with the colour/spec I wanted, drove the DSG and was "convinced" to buy it based on the current volumes being sold (hence better resale) and it also means my wife is more inclined to drive home after a night out without complainaing about having to change gears

I pick it up in a week, now need to sell the Polo !!

I was sold on the DSG after the first drive of a 118TSI last year. Not so great in a TDi IMHO. For an old cog swapper like me who learned to drive with a 3 speed crash box on an old FJ holden (in the 1970's) and driving some ancient trucks, I still enjoy the manual change. Gives me a feeling of control. But the DSG can do it faster, and from some test driving, better, than I can.

Enjoy the Golf (I will be tomorrow!)

I prefer to drive a manual but the DSG is a very good box. There were a couple of reasons I went with the manual, and one was that it meant I could spend more on the options I wanted. I'm also going to keep buying a manual until I can't. For now, at least, I've also heard there's no real issues with resale.

Might consider a particular ACT dealer when I next need a new VW, though....

They are damn good. I didn't end up buying from them, mainly because I had my heart set on RB, but excellent service. When the time comes I'll buy from them.

+1 for great service from Phillip and his team in Canberra.

I recently grabbed a manual demo Carbon Steel w Detroits from them here in Canberra.....was down to the fact a Polo GTI was 2012 delivery. No fault of the dealer, they kept me in the loop at all times. At least they offered me options, rather than just taking my money.

Am VERY glad I got a manual. For me, I would pay more money to swap cogs myself.
