How Does Mark VI GTI Compare with Mark V

Could someone possibly organise one of those polls so people could register their preferences? Eg:

Do you prefer the look of the front of the Mark V or the Mark VI GTI?

Good idea, but if you put it in the Mk V sub-forum you will get one lot of responses (mostly biased one way), and if you put in the Mk 6 sub-forum you'll get a different lot of responses (mostly biased the other way).

And if you put it anywhere else you'll get a whole lot of comments along the lines of "Who gives a flying frap-doodle ? "

So many opinions on style are just personal preferences, and even when there is a clear consensus it doesn't mean the majority are "right", just that that particular piece of styling appears to more people.

Getting people's personal preferences is precisely the point; ie to get some idea of whether VW got the new GTI grill right (from the public's point of view). If no one liked it then you'd say the answer was "no". Whether or not that answer was well-informed, it's the opinion that counts in matters of taste. (Take the original Subaru Tribeca for instance, the widely panned styling of which led to an early revamp of the front).

I take your point that any surveys here will probably be biased one way or the other, but better than nothing!

Going to be hard to get everyone to agree what's better as it's all subjective and personal preference.

Who's arguing and who said anything about getting "everyone to agree"? It would be a survey.

While the grill might be only one part of the car, it is probably the only area where opinion is divided on whether the Mark VI GTI has improved over the Mark V. So finding out what people think (not what they agree on!) is the objective.

I find myself explaining things a lot on this forum or just at cross purposes as in this case because someone thinks a survey is of no use because opinions on style are "personal preferences" (of course - they always are) or are irrelevant because they would be subjective (which they are)!

And that is precisely the point - to find out people's opinions which are necessarily subjective and invariably statements of personal preference.

I scarcely believe this has to be explained.

I'll just wait for the next comment along the lines of "no point doing a survey of what people think of the new grill as you will only get people's subjective opinions/personal preferences!".

I still like the MKV front and it was obviously done to be inline with the Audi's full height grill, and don't have a problem with it.

Anyway the differences aren't enough to make me want to upgrade and doesn't mean you have to either, just up to the individual as to what makes you happy.

Whilst I know that you are of the opinion that VW went the wrong way with the grill, it certainly isn't the only part of the MK6 which has opinions divided.

Even on this forum there have been discussions about the blue instrument cluster lighting of the MKV vs the white lighting of the MK6. The MKV headrests vs the MK6 headrests. And of course, the MKV tail-lights vs the MK6 tail-lights - which has even been mentioned here with JustCruisin and G-rig having a different opinion on which is better.

As for a survey or poll to be created, I've just read through the thread and documented peoples opinions where they've clearly given them.

(Comments in brackets mention what comment from their post triggered their preference in my brief 'survey' of the thread).

well i didn't say I didn't like the front end, it's quite sleek. It's the rear tail lights that don't quite sit right and what most people don't like.

So not really a case that they got the mk5 wrong at all, look how many have sold. It's probably just the retro people that want the styling to be like the old golfs, which weren't really anything special just what was in at the time.

I'd have a mk6, but it's still very similar and don't consider it a big upgrade.

Back in 1994 people were horrified that the new MK3 Golf look like a "Daihatsu", then in 1998 everyone was horrified that the MK4 Golf looked too Japanese (those MK4 headlights were way radical back then). Then in 2004 Mk4 owners were laughing at everyone who bought a MKV because they looked like a "Honda Civic".

Funny, same argument comes around every generation.

Just be thankful Bangle stayed at BMW & never got his hands on the Golf or we would be driving something like this:

Yeah I know... I should've put a disclaimer or something on my post, I put you in the 'For MKV' column because you'd specifically said you liked the MKV nose and that was the 'biggest complaint' from Dubya.
