Is the time on the radio when it's turned on? Maybe turn it down instead of off? That way it's free

Unfortunately not - the time is not displayed on the RCD510 at any stage (whether its on or off).

BTW the MDI is the component that allows you to connect a USB drive or iPod to your head unit. It has absolutely nothing to do with the time. What you're asking is all about displaying the time on a head unit when it's switched off. And has been discussed elsewhere, that's not an option on the RCD-510, only the RNS.

Now you just need to upgrade to the RNS... you know... for the clock

    I am seriously considering it.
Was yours just plug and play?

It's either that.. or get a phone cradle for the time and satnav

    It's 99% plug and play.

Yes you can just plug it in and it works. Coding is needed to get it to put the directions on the MFD, which is nice, but not essential. IE wait till you find someone who can flick that switch for you for nix.

That said, if I had my time over and no nav in the car I'd be seriously looking at some of the android based units available now. Not only do you get a wider range of Nav options (since it would run any android app) you also could run something like TorquePro for some neat gauges on your screen

Don't get me wrong, the RNS is nice enough and it does just work... but there is no audible speed camera/school zones and adding them in as POI's on the map is manual and a hack at best. Bottom line you can spend half the money and get far more functionality. I can't comment on the build quality or how good/bad they are to use day to day, just that they look very tempting.

Can confirm on my end - I have the RNS in my TSI and the RCD in the GTI... Only the RNS shows the time when the unit is off. There's a few other small options too which are not on the RCD which I'd like to see. One is the ability to 'Switch off display' when the radio/MDI is playing, this really comes in handy at night. I'm not sure if it can be solved with a firmware update if anyone's done it?

I know it's a bit late replying but I thought I'd chime in anyways =)
