Hill Hold Assist - can it be turned on/off?

I've just had my gearbox software updated due to a number of nagging compliants and i noticed that the hill hold function no longer seems to be activated... Is it something that can be switched back on without heading into the dealer? I looked through the manual and only saw content describing the function and nothing about switching it on/off - perhaps I didnt read carefully enough.

    Car is a 118TSI DSG

btw - it didnt fix the 2nd gear shudder, or the grinding noise when it shifts back to 3rd.

I don't know about the DSG MK6, but my manual Cab applies the brakes where our DSG Multivan has an "anti rollback" feature which I think uses the gearbox itself to stop the vehicle moving backwards.

Yes it does. I have a steep driveway and it's quite noticeable.

I don't believe it can be turned off, however to activate it, you have to "pump" the brake pedal. You will know it is active when you feel the brake pedal become rock hard.

To tell you the truth, I wish I could deactivate it in reerse as it is positively dangerous (as I have described elsewhere). Yeaterday I had to cpme out of an angle parking bay where the left front wheel had gone into the kerb gutter. It was dangerous, made worse by other drivers refusing to give way, even when was already 2/3 of the way out of the bay. They wanted to go around no matter what. In the end I had to use the handbrake to control rear movement, and even here I kept getting the handbrake on warning tone despite the fact that I had my foot on the brake disengaging the clutches anyway. As far as the software was concerned, because the handbrake light was on and the transmission selector was in R, the warning would sound after around 5 seconds.

On the grinding noise, it sounds more like something is vibrating against something. Check to see if this happens at a particular RPM under load. If it does, it is more likey to be a vibration/contact issue than a gearbox fault.

It can be adjusted using VAGCOM.

Is hill hold assist the practice of the car rolling backwards slightly when you are on an uphill incline before it seems to 'grab' and hold? The downward roll feels as though 'R' is engaged, versus a 'natural roll' in my opinion. I find this disconcerting. Especially as it also seems to feel the same as when you DO engage reverse and the system seems to want to help you by actually moving the car backwards before you are quite ready.

I find these 'assists' the only thing about the DSG I do not like.

My R definately uses brakes to perform the assist. When I go to take off pushing on the accelerator there is a pause then the brakes suddenly let go. The more pedal you give it the more dramatic it lets go. Took a bit of getting use to when diving into traffic flow when on an incline start.

Have a look in Controller 03 - ABS Brakes. With VCDS look at 07 - Coding at the state of Byte 16, Bit 0, should be ticked for it to be on.
    It's adjusted using Controller 03, 10 - Adaption, channel 58 - three settings...

HSA is good but inconsistent in my experience, which makes things interesting sometimes. For steep driveways, etc, I just use the handbrake as you would in a manual. I haven't tried the "pump" brake thing though (just normal resting pressure), but would have to try that when there's no cars behind me. There were a few near misses when reversing out of my steep driveway where I caught the car on the handbrake because the clutch went in after not giving it enough revs (because you don't want go go faster when you can't see behind you properly).
