I did a back to back test drive, GTI and then GTD. For me, GTI won. It fits my needs more. I like that it is more responsive, also I don't do high mileage to get benefits of GTD.

    ok...thanks guys.

good info. I do indeed want the GT spec of car...so fuel consumption is not of as much of a concern to get me to the point of a Bluemotion..., However, I do alot of kms, so if the diesel shows a huge difference, then I will consider it for the next car....

But if the GTD is stilll a fun car, then this may suit me.

I would say that the "answer" to this thread will be much like the answer to the 118TSI vs 103TDI thread.

And that is, the best one is the one that suits you most

Is the GTD just the former GT TDI dressed up to look like the GTI (and priced to match)?

I drove one on the last VW track day and I wasn't impressed. It felt "soft" and lacking in excitement. Even the MKVI GTI (of which I'm not a fan) was better to drive than the GTD was.

Essentially yes it is just a GT TDI dressed up as a GTI.
However it includes all of the extra safety features of the GTI such as XDL and other electronic aids.

Ref the DPF Delete - that's the removal of the diesel particulate (soot) filter. Good for reduced back pressure and better performance AFAIK.
Mate of mine did it in a Touareg. Funnily enough there were good results, however it used to puff nice little clouds of smoke on initial take off.

Personally i haven't seen many on the Rd, they look good (the GTD) but are priced too close to the GTI, maybe they are not selling so well and prices may come back in 3-4mths?

Maybe if the gtd came in 3 door and came with better wheels i would consider it but its gti for me. I do miss having a diesel as a daily esp the fuel economy and the torque!

Sounds like it would be cheaper/more prudent to buy a low km used GT TDI and save a lot of $$.

Besides XDL and a knee airbag, what other electronic aids are there over the GT?

Considering for most cars on the market, the diesel version is more expensive, the GTD represents good value.
