Might want to look at this from top gear uk, has some info on suspension too... i.e it's not the GTI suspension.

We all know that red goes faster!Oh and the GTI has red brake calipers.
Even though we didn't provide actuall statistics in terms of performance (quite a few shared their fuel consuption and handling experiences )

I'm sure this has been covered by some already, but I am interested in thoughts and opinions about which is the better car in the real world...GTI petrol vs GTD diesel.
I have read all of the car mag reveiws etc, but would like to know what the average guy like me feels about them. Has anyone compared them back to back, and made a purchase one way or the other?

Depends what your driving situation is.
If you do a fair amount of long distance driving then i would go the GTD
If you do a lot of city/suburban driving then i would go the GTI.
Me personally i would take the GTD and get it tuned or go the DPF delete (questionable legality there i believe)
Pardon my ignorance, but what is the DPF delete?
I do alot of kms, so that is why I thought of the GTD...wonder how much more economical it really is?

DPF delete is an upgrade offered by Custom Code where the DPF (Diesel particulate filter) is removed and a tune is provided which boosts power to around 170kw or so and a large jump in torque.
It is of questionable legality due to the emissions laws in place by the EPA.
It also voids the warranty.
If you do a lot of Km's (and not peak hour stop-start driving) out of the 2, i would pick the GTD.
However if the GT moniker is not essential i would wait until the Bluemotion is released later this year and get one of those as they are in the 4l/100km range i believe.

Read the January Wheels comparo - it has some good performance and fuel consumption comparisons.
Then go drive both. They do drive differently, and chances are you'll develop a preference for one over the other once you've experienced them personally.
Ref the DPF Delete - that's the removal of the diesel particulate (soot) filter. Good for reduced back pressure and better performance AFAIK.
