I'm not sure if this is what you want to hear, but the Mk5 GT TDI is basically the same as the GTD. The Mk5 being better looking and better value (IMO).

I'm in the process of purchasing a GTI, however I have been advised to wait for the release of the GTD.
Does anyone know how the GTD compares to the GTI, in performance, features etc?
Any help would be appreciated.

Ive just traded from a mk5 GT TDI to a MK6 GTI and it really depends what you want from it
Performance wise the GTI has the edge if you like to drive it on the throttle whereas the GTD will be a bit more responsive low down for day to day driving.
The big factor in choosing is economy - I am down 300km per tank on my daily commute to work (80km freeway) average 8.3l/100 instead of 5.8l/100.
The noise is another, the GTI sounds awesome when you give it some beans, the TDI will always sound like a tractor.
Trim levels i believe in the GTI/GTD debate are a lot closer than they were for the mk5 but the GTI will have a few extra trim features.
Best bet is get out and drive them both. If i had known i was going to change jobs and put 6000km on my new GTI in the first 3 months id probably have gone another diesel. But then again, maybe the driving experience makes up for a little bit extra fuel.
Whatever you choose will be an enjoyable car.

i'd only go the gtd if the following were factors/ considerations for me:
>fuel economy
>addiction to daily-driveable torque [as in, very easily usable in crapper inner-city driving]
>having the car for the long haul [quarter of a million MILES is nothing on these cars].
if you're not in a rush, i'd be inclined to hang around for the GTD for a test drive. that way, there'll be no doubt, and you might just find yourself addicted to the torque... i know i am.

GTI for performance, GTD for economy.
There is not a huge difference in performance for normal day to day driving. As Scott has said the GTD will pull better putting around in traffic.
No Need to wait for the GTD either, just go take a 2nd had GT TDI for a spin if you can find one on a forecourt somewhere ithas nearly identical performance specs although its no longer a PD engine so the GTD will be a bit more refined.

Having owned 3 DTUK boxed diesels, I have some qualification in this. admittedly, none were VW diesels.
the fuel economy in them is absolutely awesome. The midrange punch is fantastic. the smile factor.. well at the time you're enjoying it, but it's short lived (short span in rev range).
The thing is, you dont feel guilty giving it stick, as the economy is just so good.
The GTI on teh otehr hand, with the fabulous DSG, is something else.
the sound and responsiveness is better than a diesel. I have not had a better sounding stock vehicle, ever.. period!
Yes, you do feel guilty gining it some squirt if you've previously owned cars capable of returning sub 6L/100km. Yes, my fuel bill has doubled (10L/100km on premium is nearly double 6.4L of diesel). But that equates to around an extra 50 bucks a fortnight. - so thats an extra 1300 a year in fuel
most of my driving id=s daily commute to work and back. so the aural factor id=s a big thing for me, before and after a long days work. so, to me, the fun factor is worth more than 1300 a year.
there are very few material things left in life than give me joy. this is one of them
My advice, get the GTi. life's too short, splurge on the DSG with leather (heated seats will make the missus happy).
let the wife drive the diesel outback.. that way you have the best of both worlds....

There is once you retune the GTI, 402Nm pulls hardt anyway but not everyone is into modding. Torque is good but you still need kW too.Originally Posted by STV4SYT
