I'm pretty sure i gave an unbiased first hand experience answer to what was asked re performance and features having owned both.
Does anyone know how the GTD compares to the GTI, in performance, features etc?
That's fair enough but consideration should be given to what they want out of the car and if they are likely to do any mods would be better off getting the GTI.
Also depends how many km they do and how important economy is, not that the GTI is bad. The question is a bit vague and don't know if they like they prefer the sound of a turbo or that of a tractor.

currrently... MY10 GTI | DSG | Candy White | Sunroof | 18's | BT | MDI
previously... MY08 GT TDI | DSG | Reflex Silver | Sunroof
I'd buy a diesel.. If I wanted a bus, truck or tractor
You don't know anything about poor fuel economy until you drive a modded turbo rotor.
Seriously though, if the tap tap tap doesn't disturb you then go the diesel. If your going to mod in future, go the GTI.
Mk IV Golf GTI - BMP - GIAC chip, R32 wheels, KW coilovers, rear swaybar.

The GTD may not even be much Cheaper than the GTI is that correct?
I could understand if it was heaps cheaper but aren't they going to be similar money?
Both good, depends what you want - worth going through the specs and reviews for both.

Thanks heaps for all your input.
All that I am looking for is something that is quite, smooth, comfortable and has the punch when you need it.
Sounds like the GTI is the way to go.
I don't like tractors!

Thanks Maverick,
The guys at VW tell me that the GTD will have the same performance and features as the GTI.
They also told me that the diesel is as quite as the petrol which I find hard to believe.
Having owned 3 modified diesels, I can tell you that although the figures on paper may show the diesel as a faster car, teh petrol version is by far more fun.
yes, diesel is far more fuel efficient. but, there will always be NVH issues with it.
Start up and cold performance leaves a lot to be desired. Hot performance is very very good.
power is strong, but has a very narrow band
re modding, in my experience it is far, far cheaper to mod a diesel C.F a Petrol engine. DTUK CRD2 etc boxes can be had out of the UK for around $600.
My 1.9L ASTRA CDTI was pulling out around 400NM torque.
My TTiD Saab was pushing out 540NM torque.. out of a 1.9 engine..essentially the same motor as teh Astra, but a twin turbo.
all of this with one little box plugged into teh common rail.
the both, however, sounded like mild tractors. and although quick once moving, they were relatively slow off the line.. and non inspiring to listen to.
It's interesting that the Boxer diesel is a lot quieter that the inlines...
all that said, bear in mind, I chose teh GTI and not the GTD...
More opportunites have been lost from indecision, rather than wrong decision....
