hey guys
I just booked in to Camden gti for my 90,000km service on my 2011 gti. I was told I would need a timing belt change, after doing some searching im quite sure it has a chain and wont need replacing. I rang back to query the matter but the lady on the front desk didn't have much idea and by the sounds of it all the mechanics were gone.
Am I correct in it does not need or even have a timing belt
thanks chris

Yes chain driven and I'm still indecisive on whether to do the tensioner or the whole thing, I'm at 170000klms.

Do everything at once. Cheaper in the long run. Wish i had replaced the chain 12 months ago when i had the tensioner done.....would have only cost a few hundred more.
Do both. Cheaper than replacing the whole engine like what happened to mine!
thanks guys
done a little more digging it seems unless there is noise on cold start up or other issues it is fine.
Also cant find where but can anyone confirm that a 2011 my12 gti would already be fitting with the updated tensioner?
thanks
You can tell by looking at it. If it's brass coloured then it's the old style. If it's black then it's the new one.
My understanding is that the tensioner was changed in 2012/2013
I had a complete engine failure from mine. $12,000 repair bill out of warranty. Luckily VW paid it under goodwill. If I had the older tensioner I wouldn't be messing around, I'd replace it.

I used to think I was anal-retentive until I started getting involved in car forums
