Jacs, not sure about the non-OEM filters and how they operate. But after changing oil filters on Peugeot's (Purflux OEM brand) all my life, I was pleasantly surprised with the non drip function on the GTI.

Great, thanks mate. My only problem now is whether to do an early change (hate the thought of waiting 15 000ks), or wait til the prescribed 15000 service, then do one in between (7500ks) each service.............Ive just clocked over the 8 000k mark.

I just did mine before xmas. Car was 7 mths old but had only 5,500km (as I get the train to work everyday).

Can't hurt, especially as my car is 90% stop start city driving.

If you would sleep better after doing an oil change right now, go for it. It won't kill the GTI. Even my new mower with a Briggs n Stratton engine recommends a change after "10hrs"....

I changed mine at that time purely for the reason the oil was already 1 year old, not because of the mileage. Another consideration for me was my GTI was a demo for 4 months. Started every day I guess, let run for 5 mins to charge the battery and then shut down.

    Good luck Jacs!

You can never do too many oil changes.....it wont do any harm whatsoever. I changed the oil and oil filter in my R at 5,000km and will continue to do an oil change every 6 months/5,000km (at the 1/2 way point between logbook services) until i sell the car.

As you've correctly determined, it was necessary to get oil changed.

Remember people, it's 15 000 km or 12 months, whichever is first.

Just change it if it bothers you that much.

AFAIK, the logbook services are 15 000 km or 12 months, are you sure it's different for the R?

But any case, there's no real need to change the oil every 5 000 km, especially on a modern engine using modern oils and fuels, unless your vehicle is heavily modified or something.

Ok probably going to ask a stupid question. Does the colour of the oil indicate the need for an oil change. At 3000kms my oil was black.

So I have done a bit of searching and have found various answers - can anyone link me to engine specs for the EA888 engine and fluid capacities? (my12 gti, I think that's the engine model)

I did have a flick through the manual, and couldn't find it? Bloody vw and there "just take it to the dealer"

My gti has about 4000k's on it now and I think it prudent to change that oil. Get rid of those bits of metal floating around.

    Not in a reliable manner.

Heh, the days where owners aren't allowed to open the bonnet draws ever closer!

    With oil filter : 4.7 l

    Without oil filter : 4.2 l

To ensure the oil level is properly checked :

    - The temperature of the engine oil should be at least 60°C
    - The vehicle must be on level ground
    - After switching the engine off, wait a few minutes to allow the oil to flow back into the sump.

Ensure that you do not overfill, the oil level must not be above the MAX. mark on the dipstick.

    Up to you really.

My view is that it couldn't hurt to change it, but then neither will it make a meaningful difference.

As mentioned, black oil alone doesn't necessarily means it needs a change. I'd be broke otherwise as the oil in my 307 HDi is black about 50kms after an oil change.....
