    GTI MK6 opening the boot

    Hey Guys,

This may or may not be a dumb question, but it appears that on my car I'm unable to open the boot while the key is in the ignition and the car is running. Is this normal?

The Manual says that to open the boot, you just need to press the boot opener on the key for 1 second or unlock the car completely and use the VW badge to open it.

The ONLY way for me to open the boot is to stop the car, take the key out of the ignition and then press the boot release button. Regardless of what I do I'm unable to open the boot using the badge alone.

I have a feeling that I have a wiring issue because only 1 of my reverse lights seems to be coming on also. The two issues might be related.

    Thoughts?

Firstly, all euro cars only have 1 reverse light. The other is a rear fog light, so no wiring issue there mate, nothing is wrong. Keep an eye out next time in the shopping centre car park, you'll see what I mean.

As for the boot. In my car, both the drivers and passenger doors need to be open before the boot is unlocked. It is a security feature when going to your car in a dark street etc. where you just open your drivers door and the passenger door and boot stay locked. So make sure both are unlocked (two presses of the unlock button on the key or press the unlock button inside the car). Give that a go mate, if that doesn't work, maybe someone else can help.

    Not all, only some do.

spot on press the unlock button twice when you stop, once does the drivers door and the second the other doors and the hatch if you have selective locking turned on.

Yep... and if you decide not to take Dermot's advice and leave the unlock setting to 'one door' and you find that you've forgotten to press the button twice and you can't open the boot whilst the key is in and the engine is on (happens to me every now and then), you can just press the 'unlock' button on the drivers door

Speaking of the boot release, have I got this correct?

I walk up to the locked car and unlock the boot via the boot button on the key, the boot unlocks fine. I load in all my shopping then shut the boot. All doors lock automatically.

I have paniced a few times that I have left my keys inside - seems pretty easy to do.

Now, I always use the normal unlock button to unlock all doors (at the risk of bad guys getting in the other four doors while I'm loading up the boot). This way, I am in charge of relocking (if necessary) ensuring I have keys in hand.

Well 'All doors lock automatically' isn't quite correct. Only the boot locks, since it was the only one unlocked. Same outcome though so maybe it was just funny wording of the sentence.

But you're quite right. But then, I never put my keys down in a car, so I've then no chance of locking them in

OK so I tested out all your instructions last night and yes, of course it worked. I'm just glad that I don't have wiring issue! Woohoo!

Althought I feel a bit stupid having to ask in the first place

    Thanks guys!

    That's alright man!

I notice that you have leather and the sat nav optioned up! Take my advice! One night this week, grab yourself a beer (or a wine, or bourbon - whatever takes your liking) grab a nice CD, go out to your car, and sit in it with the manual and start reading.

Try out the features whilst you're reading about them. Nothing like practical experience to entrench the information in your head. And besides, the leather seats of a new GTI is a wonderful place to be
