Just hoping the dealer is understanding about second thoughts having put in the GTD order albeit only 2 weeks ago- and 5 months wait as well (VW Camberwell)....
I went through the exact same dilemma you are... coming out of a tuned/CAI 6.0lt V8 Calais which was a blast into something where I was dead set on fuel economy (20lt per 100km in city traffic in the holden). Drove the GTD as I had my head set on it. It was okay in the DSG and the dealer was great because we went to some new roads where nothing was built and I got to fang it. Finished the drive thinking well that was good but not a lot of fun.
Went back and got the GTI and again to the same streets. It was bloody fantastic - had the wife in the front seat and dealer in the back and he was like "yeah why dont you give it some" which I did. The difference was night and day and really for the difference in fuel economy the choice was a no brainer. I put a deposit on the GTI as soon as we got back. Maybe if I had driven the manual GTD it would have been a different story but I didnt and I am still really happy with my choice. I never ever think "gee I should have got the one with better fuel economy..." I do tell people how much I still love driving Candy (that's her name) even after a year it is as much fun as the day I test drove it with the dealer.
I say you should get the GTI.
