Yep, that's what he (I) meant. If I had anyone behind me in the Mini I had to adjust my driving position. As I wrote that though I reasoned that the Golf would have more leg room for rear passengers in any case. I know there's heaps of room in the 5 door for rear passengers.

I know what you meant, some people around here want everyone to agree with them and justify their purchases. I was lead to believe the 3 door should have as much room in the back as 5 door?
I've owned a few Hondas (DC2R and Civic VTI-R and you need to move your seat forward in those).
You see - that's why I was confused about Tux's comment and thought it was just cause of badly designed seats.
Yes, where there is a 3dr and 5dr variant of a 'hatchback', they (almost) always have the same wheelbase, and therefore usually have the same front and rear seat capacity.
Of course, the Mini is well known for it's ridiculously small rear passenger space, so that's no surprise.
I had a 2001 Toyota Echo Sportivo, and I never needed to move my seat forward even when I had my 6'2" friends in the back! It's much smaller than a Mini, but has a different usage of its space.
