With 4700 km on the tyres.. i'd most likely just replace the damaged tyre.
Any more than that and i'd be inclined to move it off and replace them both.
Good opportunity for someone to grab a good spare though.
OK, so i managed to wreck a tyre this morning on the way to work.
Dunno if ill go another OEM tyre or not, so the question is, has anyone done the same and have a spare tyre lying around to get me going again, or is anyone interested in my other one if i replace both.
FYI its a rear with 4700km on it and is the Dunlop SP Sport 225/40/zr18
If i can pick up a match then ill prob do that otherwise ill have the other good one for sale.

Yeah, doing some hunting around, best i can get is $285 for a new one, its still an SP sport but its a signature instead of a maxx. not sure what the differences are, but ill wait and see what my mate in the trade can dig up for me.
Either way its bloody annoying.

Yeah - the rear tyres in a hatchback don't do anything other than keep you from dragging your ar$e on the road Just replace that single tyre.
If it were a front tyre after 5000km on a GTI - THEN it might need replacing both, since you've probably been hooning a bit and have some decent wear (and if you haven't been hooning a bit, why have you got a GTI )
Yeah, that was my plan, BUT there are no SP sport maxx in australia, they are now obsolete and i have been quoted $445 per corner for the replacement the sport maxx TT.
Whatever i do ill do a rotate and balance a the same time, 5000km on the fronts i reckon they will be glad of a break.

OK, this is proving to be more difficult than i though it would be.
I cant get a SP Sport Maxx as they have been apparently replaced by a Sport Maxx TT.
Not a big fan of running unmatched tyres on the same axle but really dont want to drop upwards of $1000 on a matching pair of dunlops.
Anyone got any advice re running slightly different incarnations of the same tyre together?

are you allowed to run unmatched tyres on the same axle? I was of the mind they had to be the same??

Have you spoken to VW about this? Maybe they could help in some way, since although it's not their fault that one of the tyres has died, you do have a relatively new car, and supplying it with tyres which are not available in this country is not a very helpful thing to do.
If you really get stuck - Tire Rack has the Dunlop Sport Maxx in stock for under US$150 for your size. Shipping on 4 18" Golf sized tyres is ~US$250. I doubt that for a single tyre the shipping would be 1/4 - but lets just say it was 1/2 - then that'd mean it'd cost you ~AU$325 delivered.
Great suggestion Corey.
