Does the wastegate rattle that affected the petrol engine also apply to the diesels?
Hi Guys
Just wondering if any other MK6 GTD owners ever get an odd noise from their turbo. I reckon mine sounds a bit clattery when easing off accelarator as though something is out of alignment. Dealer assured me this is a "characteristic of this engine" but sounded a bit like a fob off to me. To me it sounds a bit metallic, like a clunky fan, rather than a German engineered turbocharger! I've driven other MK6 non GTD(Bluemotion & TDI) diesels and never heard the same noise so a bit curious... Apart from that am thoroughly happy with it, but won't bore with torque, driveability and economy nonsense
Does the wastegate rattle that affected the petrol engine also apply to the diesels?

I haven't experienced the rattle you mentioned. 'Touch wood' I have only done 20k km though.

I have a rattle when backing off from high revs, mainly while "having fun", the rattle is followed by a small (sigh) "burble" as the revs die down to something normal. I like to give mine a regular "bootfull" to try and keep everything clean inside the motor, I read somewhere here (or a linked article) that a high speed back off is a good thing once in a while to help prevent sticky VNT vanes. Perhaps another dealer or one of the independent mechanics/techs could help with your concerns.
FWIW, I have just brought up 58,000 clicks and it goes like a dream still, and it does "clatter" a bit.

Ok, put car in for 30K service and went for a roadtest with the mechanic afterwards. The noise predictably subsided but luckily picked up enough for the mechanic to say it was audible and unusual so the dealer has agreed to look at it under warranty! BTW the noise also happens on throttle input as well as on back off and has been around since the car was brand new. Not sure when i'll get a chance to drop it back in but interested to find out what it is. Just glad the dealer has decided to investigate...
You would have to be one of "the few" who have actually had a problem present itself when required, go buy a lotto ticket. I'd like to know the outcome ( if any ) for future reference.

Hi there, I have what I think maybe a similar noise from my 2012 gtd. I hear an audible rattle around 2500rpm which I cannot believe would be normal. I've only done 6000km and had the car back to dealer several times. They say its normal and that other gtds do the same. I've never read anything about this noise in car appraisals as I'm sure the worlds motoring writers would pan such a flaw.
I would welcome any hints on how to tackle or approach this problem with the dealer/VW in order to resolve.
Finally got the rattle sorted out! It appears the problem was the oil filler cap which was not seated correctly. It was replaced under warranty and everything sounds normal which is great as it been doing my head in since day one.... Just a heads up for anyone who may have a similar problem. I did have to push fairly hard for them to take it seriously but getting a mechanic to come along for a spin was the key.
Taking mine in for 60k service next week. $1100 is the quote! Don't care though because the car has been and still is superb.
No rattles, no clunks, 5.1 average fuel use. Dead branch came down from a tree in the wind yesterday while doing 100kmh and dented roof. Glad I wasn't on bike!
