A true enthusiast would probably ride a Ducati during the week and drive some sort of unregistered track weapon on the weekends.
Else they would eat two minute noodles for a decade in order to buy a 911 gt3....or something..

The RS250 is a better car to drive.
Enthusiasts, by their very definition, care more about how a car drives
Evo does not rate the Scirocco above the RS250 Cup. They also rate the previous versions R26.R as one of the best affordable sports cars around for sheer driving enjoyment. Not refinement. Not cupholders. Not reliability. Sheer driving enjoyment.
You are confusing being a car enthusiast with being a badge snob. Not everything in life can be brought down to having a dollar value.

Fair enough. You are still way off the initial topic that Audi's resale is so bad compared to BMW V Merc that it makes no sense to buy a new one as they sell for VW prices as used cars. And enthusiasts don't buy Audis over a BMW or Merc or VW as all of these cars are more or less the same as I have driven them all from the dealers around the place who invite me to the launches. Don't know why a Renault (which does not even rank on this list of cars mentioned, except they have F1 pedigree) was even dragged into this discussion - merely to justify that enthusiasts don't care about resale (I still disagree).
And I can't remember what UK mag it was - may be CAR. Nonetheless, one or the other magazines are being bribed by the car manufactures to win awards.
But if an Audi really does float your boat, buy one new. Just don't complain that your wallet is tens of thousand dollars less come selling time.

I've owned a used Audi, and a used BMW.
You seem to think that an enthusiast makes a rational decision. A true enthusiast doesn't.
A golf is a good car. But don't kid yourself. It is not the be all and end all.
Every magazine I have read agrees that the Renault is the far superior drivers car. I've driven one. It is. But 2 doors only for a start meant that I had to make a compromise and get a less well driving car.
An enthusiast can and will buy an Audi - it just depends on which model. An RS4? Yes. An R8? Yes. A TTRS? Yes. A NA A4 with an SLine pack? No. The same applies to Merc. And BMW.
I don't car if you spend your weekends getting invited by dealers (oh get you, you big time player) for testdrives. It is meaningless.

As I said, fair enough that you like Audis/Renaults. Although you have still missed the entire point of what this thread is all about - namely that Audi resale values lag well behind its main rivals. That is why they represent great buying used (hence the initital thread about an A3 2.0T having no value used, irrespective if it is a great car or not). Totally irrelevant if an enthusiast buys an Audi, Renault or whatever else floats their boat. I think everyone here gets the point, except some who still want to defend the Audi marque to death do us part. The market (which is so much bigger than this entire forum) has already spoken in volumes about what it really thinks on the Audi brand and has demolished it on the used car scene. Which makes great buying for value seekers like me if I so choose to buy one. Which is what this thread was alluding to all along.

The original poster wasn't even talking about resale but power comparisons .....
Lost in translation again

The OP was referring indirectly to Audi resale values by pointing out how a fairly recent 2nd hand Audi S3 which has VERY similar specification to the Golf R can be bought for far, far less than the Golf R
