S3 is a good car in isoloation, but not at the premium over a GTi or R. The current model will take even more of a bath on resale as the new A3 is already released. Look out for 3 yr old version fetching 40% of their RRP soon!

I still think that enthusiasts will be concerned about resale and all - who the hell wants to throw money away? Unless you have more money than brain cells, money is hard enough to make without the govt taxing the crap out of what little is left after they take the first lot. So I do not buy into the enthusiasts don't care about $$$ at all statement. Unless they buy Alfas and Maseratis of course (and also new Audis while I am on the subject - still debatable if enthusiasts actually buy Audis).

Pretty much all new Audi owners lose huge $$$ and all bitch about why their cars are worth so little relative to the same BMW or Mercedes. But that will be good for people like us who know the used car value and pick up a prestige car for a VW price (or less). So what is all the fuss about? Looks like everyone who has thrown their 2 bobs worth agrees that you buy a new Audi at a BMW/Mercedes Benz price but sell next time at VW prices.

A true enthusiast would put handling above reliabilty and resale and get a Renault.

Not an anodyne German hatch based on resale.

I saw a 4-5 year old 3 door Audi S3 with about 60,000km odo selling at a Parramatta Road dealership for 37K in the recent past. I figure the dealer must have paid about high 20,s to 30K for this vehicle. In contrast ... I sold my last MKV GTI 3.5 yrs old with 45,000km for 34K privately. Not exactly apples for apples, but a 70K Audi for similar price as a 50K MKV GTI ... stick with Volkswagen if you want a better chance of trading-up for less $$$.
    Cheers.

Don't understand how a Renault is any more enthusiast than a VW. Renault's don't sell for the aforementioned reasons mentioned, plus they have even less brand prestige than VW.

And for anyone who dares to quote "motor mag rates the Rs250 over Golf GTi V Golf R, may I point you to EVO/CAR mag in the UK, they rank the Scirocco above the RS250, lending to the theory that either Renualt Aust pays Aust magazines for favourable reviews, or VW does in the UK.

I sold my a3 for 80% of its new car price after 2.5 years and 50k kms. Dealers were offering insulting values on the tradin but that's their job. I was happy with that.

Isn't it just a percentages game.. I mean if a car is going to drop 30% in value over x years then by default a higher priced car is going to take a bigger hit

Then of course there is a range depending on condition and kays..

a moot point if you ask me, why buy a car for the resale value.. sure it has some importance but not in the 3 - 5 years of owning a car.. too many factors.

never trust what the used car industry people say. u talk to new audi salesperson, he would say beautiful things including the resale.

lawyers and car sales people are the smartest storymakers.

    this thread needs redbook facts.

Maybe we need a dedicated resale value thread, although to be fair this talk doesn't really relate to the Mk6 at all, so the whole Audi vs VW vs The World on depreciation is probably best suited to General Discussion. At least then it'd be more searchable for people wanting to know about this stuff in the future.

Let's see if we can get the thread back on track... if there is a track.
