as long as the first owner of an Audi took a bath on depreciation, maybe.... That way, I bought an S3 for a GTI price! But not if the S3 has heaps of kms, is thrashed and is a 3dr (as 3drs have even worse resale value).

Like for like, a 135i does sell for a more in the used car market than an S3, despite costing the same new.

I would prefer a golf r over a s3 just cause people think. Your wealthier just cause you drove an audi

I don't follow your logic, maybe because I am not an accountant. You say that a "true enthusiast wouldn't drive an Audi", but you concede that one may drive an RS4 although it has four doors???

    You lost me

Don't feel too bad, an Accountant and an enthusiast are mutually exclusive.. never the twain shall meet

always exceptions to the rule. RS4 is probably one of a handful of Audis that make enthusiast grade, but owners are kidding themselves (as are C63 and M3 drivers for that matter) if they think their cars rank in the Porsche category. I have owned a Porsche and driven most of them (old and new) and nothing out there comes near them for all round engineering and driving dynamics. Having driven most of the modern day Audis and BMWs and Mercs, Audis rank far below BMWs for sheer driving pleasure (excuse the jingle) and lack the engineering solidarity of Mercedes. They are really dressed up VWs.

I am worried if your accountant is the same one who worked for Lehman Brothers.

I would suggest that is the nub of the issue, enthusiast are not rational, they are aware that all the different brands have strengths and weaknesses and appreciate those they are enthused by.. the Accountant however wants and needs to rationalise their decision, ergo you are not right nor wrong just self assuring

Perhaps. I think there are more VW than Audi enthusiasts out there - look at the following of Beetle, Kombi, GTI, R etc round the world Vs Audi models. And the more intellgent ones amongst us either realise that Audi's are VWs with a nicer party dress and don't fork out the difference to buy one new, or buy Audis used at VW prices and enjoy a fine car at a bargain price. The evidence on this thread thus far validates this hypothesis and the used car market presents the findings. And surely you don't need to be a chartered accountant to have worked that one out!
