It's getting a bit too close to the release of the Mark 7 Golf variants: GTD, GTI, GTI-PP and R in addition to the Audi A3/S3 ... not to mention the BRZ and FT86 for me. Mark 6 is a foregone conclusion. Ray's R32 was coming up to 6 years old and showing signs of age. My GTI is coming up to 3.5 years old, have to wait and see. I have never had to top up the oil in my GTI between services and never had any issues with the GTI thus far.

No need to argue any more. As it turned out, V and VI are both fairly forgettable cars, regardless of R or GTI flavour. Sorry, they're gonna be remembered for their DSG issues.
It looks like VII will be a winner and who knows, might turn to be a future classic like the properly looking IV. Here's hope...

I was talking about the Golf generations and not in particular about the high performance versions. Do you really think that any Joe Blogs would know these details? Six or seven speed DSG, recalled or not? The stain lingers for a long time, just ask Fiat and Skoda

What do you guys think is the most memorable thing about MK6? Is it R's shedding of cylinders? The GTI losing its black underwear?

My honest opinion is that people will forget it very quickly. In recent times Toyota has had lots of quality and recall issues, but the issues were addressed and people still believe Toyotas are the most reliable cars on the road. We live in a world with a 24 hour news cycle, people forget what happened yesterday.

Yet you directly mentioned the R and GTI in your previous post?
Is it R's shedding of cylinders?

    Golf R -v- Golf GTI

He is talking about the engine change on the R down from a 6 to a turbo 4

The underwear reference is talking about colour coding

Any way the R doesn't pretend to be a an R32 but modern range topper that pays tribute to the R32 classic. It will be remembered as the first of the series and I do believe a classic in its own right

I've had two Golf GTI's with DSG ... no dramas with the DSG for me or the buy that purchased my old MKV GTI. Just stay away from the turbo/supercharged motor & 7 speed dry clutch DSG and you'll be fine. Personally ... I would've waited for the MK7 Golf R or Audi S3 with more drivable motor with max torque coming in at 1800rpm re: turbo lag. After a couple days of ownership, Ray is thinking that the Golf R MK6 needs a set of H&R f & r sway bars ... I agree after driving the Golf R second time around in this thread ... no need for lowering springs, moreso a good set of matched H&R sway bars. The new Mark 7 Golf GTI is a bit ordinary to look at and apparently less interactive to drive ... a case of machine triumphing over driver. The Golf GTI in particular is starting to look expensive esp with a few options based on the competition out there. The Mark 7 will have to be better specced for same or cheaper price with options more reasonably priced.

I don't think the stain of the issues will sit on a particular model, it will sit on the brand. As mentioned Toyota had issues in the past trying to fob off recall issues and they lost market share, they now put there hand up straight away and say 'Could be an issue with X model and Y component, owners should bring the car in for inspection and repair'

If VW Australia put there hand up straight away there would be no problems with the public as they would then be confident that VW are a brand that don't just pretend there is no problems.

Anyways didn't stop me getting a MKVI GTI although I did just stay away from the DSG even though it has not been an issue for this car
