Hi Guys,
I was reading on Wikipedia (so it's got to be true ) about the engine differences between the GTI and the R, it listed the following:
Lower compression forged pistons
Strengthened connecting rods
Enlarged wrist pins
Stronger piston rings
Upgraded bearings
Reinforced engine block
Upgraded camshafts (longer duration)
Upgraded injectors (+13% flow)
Larger K04 turbo producing 1.2 bar of boost (+3 PSI over K03 equipped GTI)
Larger intercooler (+30%)
Relocated bypass valve

Is this true for the Australian model? Just interested
2020 VW Golf R
The R runs the (older) belt-driven EA113 motor. The GTI runs the chain-driven EA888. The above may be correct for comparing the Mk5 GTI and Mk6 R engines? Or potentially the Golf GTI ED35, which runs the EA113 Golf R engine in a softer state of tune... (but scratch that, it runs a K04).
As far as I was aware, the intercoolers were effectively the same between the GTI and R... but I could be wrong.
Edit: Moved your post into the Golf R -v- Golf GTI thread... as you're comparing the R and GTI engines.

Bear in mind that the Golf R North American spec is apparently softer in the suspension, but understeers less than the AUS/EURO version Golf R.

Despite the new MK7 Golf GTI with added power-pack & electro-mechanical LSD, hopefully VW will make it more engaging to drive and better value for money a'la Focus ST and Megane RS265. No need to necessary be faster, just more fun to drive with fixed-price servicing schedule & 5 year warranty:

These reviews are endless, and also fairly pointless. They essentially say the same things about each car, but different sources place greater emphasis on some attributes than others. Motor did a GTI vs 86 vs ST review and the former two tied; Wheels preferred the ST. This one prefers the Megane (although I'm sceptical of any review that just quotes manufacturer acceleration figures and doesn't do their own testing). It's really down to personal preference.

I was going to say much of the same.. really does seem to be a situation of the same but different. Bang for buck they are all about the same, quality wise the Germans still have it, best handling / ride pick a day and the road surface and your preference and it will come up trumps. Other than that look at resale and your badge commitment

hello,
After owning a MkV GTi for 3 years, I am changing up to a MkVI R (MY13), only option is the leather. Couldn't justify the MkVI GTi, as it is only a stop gap till the MkVII. And I got a cracking deal.
The R pulls like a train compared to my Stage 1'd GTi. And I know there has been a lot of debate about what is better on track, it is not a factor for me, I have an Exige for that duty. I just want a storming daily.
Bring on the new year.
Thanks,
Lindsay
Some VW, some Lotus
Speaking of stop-gap. Neighbour Ray had his Golf R32 up for auction a few weeks ago ... 52,000kms and 5 years old with fancy Pioneer stereo/Nav unit. R32 failed to hit reserve at 33K passing in at 31.5K.Couldn't justify the MkVI GTi, as it is only a stop gap till the MkVII.
To add insult to injury, he had a provisional deposit on a VW Corporate fully loaded Golf GTI with 19" Golf R wheels, only to inspect the car and find out it had some minor cosmetic damage that had to be fixed by the dealer. The same dealer offered him another VW Corporate Golf GTI with same Golf R wheels, but not fully loaded (minus DCC & Xenons) with 7K off rrp demo price (both GTI had about 5,000kms on odo), but same thing ... Golf GTI just a stop-gap and MK7 Golf GTI around the corner.
Same dealer suggested to Ray that they believe that the Golf GTI MK7 will arrive end of second quarter of 2013 with Golf R towards the end of 2013 as Volkswagen wants a fast roll out of models for the new MK7. Time will tell.
To add further complications ... Ray's R32 is now out of half-baked dealer warranty with the limist of 3K of dealer funded warranty repairs now exhausted (DSG sensor + faulty fuel gauge). The joys of owner a European car that is now 5-10 years old.
For a moment there, I thought we could have put this thread to rest, but with me sticking with the GTI, and Ray rescinding on a Golf R order and now pulling a deposit on a VW Corporate demo Golf GTI, making two failed Golf purchases in as many years ... this thread may well morph into a Mark 7 Golf GTI -v Golf R version.
On a side note ... my GTI is now over 2.5 years old and with 45,000km service recently been performed, has not used a drop of oil, plenty of meat on the brake pads and still with original factory tyres (RE050A) with another good 5K-10K life left in them (XDS diff helps with tyre life in that regard).
Cheers.
WJ
