I enjoy my GTD. Great economy and grunt. Not in the GTI or R league for that though. It really is a personnel choice I think. I guess you need to think of economy, cost, long term, would you/wife enjoy driving a diesel compared to the GTI/R?

Thanks all. I know of a cancelled R order with some goodies that I might be able to jump on, could be pretty tempting. Flipside is If I can find a GTD before 30 June, with corporate plus disc and free on roads/EOFY sale can get one at a great price. Question is then, is the R worth 15-20k more?

    Handling: Oversteer & Understeer

Okay ... so we know that the Golf R exhibits greater on the limit understeer than Golf GTI. The Sirocco R understeers even less than the Golf GTI and is more composed and planted around the track and slalom. The Golf R more stable during emergency manouvres due to improved front to rear weight balance. Here's a video showing how the already impressive Sirocco R compares with the Toyota FT86 ... in addition to the Mazda MX-5 and BMW 120i Coupe. The German cars do carry greater amount of understeer ... perhaps a function of high speed autobahn tuning. The Volkswagen Driver Training Evolution Course had participants driving emergency manouvres up to speeds of 100kph for a time, with a number of drivers having half spins in the Sirocco R with less weight in the rear end. Highlights importance of good suspension tuning, both from factory and aftermarket if there's a desire to do so for local AUS conditions.

I first posted to this thread maybe 2 years or so ago when I was looking to get into a Golf, 7 months ago I grabbed a GTI 5 door with DSG and Detroits with all drive aways paid for, so $42kish

On top of purchase price I've spent about $2.5k on mods so far, maybe that much again to come over a similar time period.

Overall I'm pretty happy with the GTI. Golf R would have been awesome but in the end I couldn't afford the upfront cost. If I had the extra money when I was buying I dare say I would have gone the R.

But I still would have spent the same amount of money on mods though!
