Heck, even my daughters Swift (1.4) is an absolute hoot to drive like this. The 86 even better.

As much as I love my R, the 86 looks better, probably outhandles it. Downsides are, way less power and torque, no AWD, none of the niceties. I would never replace my R with one but I am looking at one as a second car.

That is exactly the point, an engine that requires RPM to perform involves the driver more as you have to shift more and shift smarter.... adds to the fun alright! I guess some ppl just dont get it bro.

I wouldn't call it slow either. Not as quick as my R but it aint a slug.

Most recent one I saw posted a video showing 0-200 kph time

I think it was 28 seconds to 200 kph. The S2000 mk1 is more than 29 seconds and I am pretty sure it is a similar time to cars such as the 350z and Z4 coupe.

The BRZ and 86 sound pretty good too in video clips.

Looking forward to test driving one. At least they seem to be more connected to the road than the Golf's

To my mind, the MX-5 is a closer competitor to the Subyota even though the Mazda has far less power. These cars are about balance and finesse while WRX's, Golf R's and the like take a brute force approach.

But if you want one as a toy car, why not go the whole hog and get a Caterham or similar? If I could justify a toy car, that'd be what I would get.

This was where my thinking was, it really isn't a class competitor in the GTI/R space. I think it possibly BFYB there is a good argument and the aftermarket bits will go for eva.. again not a hater but the reason I moved from the Jap brands to the Euro is the low down useable torque for everyday driving. This unit seems to say that it is "fun" on its limit, as a daily.. hard to say at this point

Here you go... not withstanding this is a garbage, contradicting review.. it sums up what I was trying to say

To start off with, the engine can feel a little bit under-done in comparison to what you might expect from the design and layout of the car.

It doesn’t just dole out masses of horsepower like a turbo WRX or the 370Z, you have to work for it.

That doesn’t mean it’s gutless, but you have to be in the right gear and be prepared to rev it to really get going.

On the track, it means you have to be smart about the way you attack a corner. You can’t just hook in, stomp on the accelerator and hang the tail all the way out, because it doesn’t necessarily have the horsepower to maintain the drift.

I'm with you on that. It's a great drivers car. Not a car that is quick in a straight line.

It doesn't suit my needs, and I'm not considering one. But that doesn't mean I can't respect it for being bloody good at what it does.

But it's only bloody good at what it does about 1% of the time and in a very short power/torque band so 99% of the time it will be dissapointing.

I personally have not driven one yet but professional driver reviews (except twats like EVO) rate it highly (the 86)

The Subie engine has a pretty good torque curve for what it is
