Good to get such a high profile instructor!
I'm not familiar with this circuit, but you'd expect an R and GTI to be closer on a slower circuit where weight and agility play a bigger part. I'd also expect a pro to be able to push a GTI a lot harder than the average punter, while the R, being more grip-and-go, would allow most drivers to get closer to the limit of the car's ultimate potential. On a faster track, too, you'd see the R walk away up high.
How did you find the GTI's traction out of low speed corners? Was it adequate?

You're right, Norwell is a slower circuit, my top speed on the short straight in the R was only 120+/-
Tony's effort through the witches hats in the R made my effort look seriously pedestrian. I was really surprised at the traction capability of the GTI, even in the wet, although speed was down. More than adequate, aided by the grippy Norwell surface.
I have had Tony several times at the O'Neill Events drive days (O'Neill Events run the VW Program too)
He was excellent in his coaching, and drove 4 laps at Sandown in my car... good steerer indeed!!!!!
Makes you realize what these cars are capable of given a good driver is behind the wheel.
