True, but the R doesn't have an issue with a turbo rattle either, or the need to buy all the parts to make it look like one

Yes, I've noticed ....
As for a GTI or an R, clearly a GTI owner will justify their purchase over an R but deep down they know it was a compromise. Nothing wrong with that as buying any VW is a compromise, just that the GTI adds another layer to that decision (been there, done that)

The R is a good car but only because many reviewers have driven the GTI and see the similarities but then they'd all ask whether the additional cost is justified. IMHO the R is definately not worth 10k more and in the MK6 gen the GTI is the preferred choice and best bang for buck. Maybe in the next gen (mk7) we might see a swing in general preference towards the R. Although a scirocco has shown it can match an R around a track, which means the AWD is really only beneficial to the hard core motorists who push the torque/hp to it's limit with modifications or for drivers in countries that snow/rain a lot. I am glad to have the GTI as it constantly averages about 350km per half a tank (done about 400km many times) with an equal mix of city/freeway driving.

I moved from a MKV GTI to an R

I would have paid double the differential the R is that much better

AWD in daily use is a must for me (a track doesn't have ice, snow, oil spills, tram lines, white lines at intersections etc) but I agree, if you can't afford it the GTI is OK. I used to own one so I know exactly what they can and can't do in everyday usage.

Track discussion is pointless. Which vehicle handles more power to the ground ?

If fuel use is a buying criteria you should not gave bought a GTI

Personally, being from Canada originally, I can see the need for AWD over there. It helps tremendously in the snow But here in Australia? No, I don't see a need for it. Not for day to day driving.

Are you at any less risk of hydro planing with AWD? No. You may be able to recover better than FWD, but the risk is just as much.

I also find AWD much less engaging to drive.

Fair comment, however if you want to chip your car then getting that power down is hard with a FWD. The AWD is more planted and handling is much better in the wet ( which we have a fair bit these days ).

Yes the AWD feels different but as I have said before for those that enjoy that "feel" then it is a no brainer

Seriously, if you haven't seen the need for AWD as an everyday driver, you either only drive when the sun is shining or prefer the passengers seat.

My stock GTI was pathetic in the wet

Still, I had a Subie prior so going to FWD was always going to be interesting

Glad to be rid of axle tramp, skidding on tram tracks, oil spots and white lines.
