Speaking of feeling: autoexpress.co.uk have voted the standard Golf GTI hot-hatch of 2011. The ED35 GTI is referred to in this video review as is the different in the power delivery between the EA888 motor and older EA113 motor. No mention of the Golf R.

That would be because the R is overpriced in the UK.
More expensive than the S3 etc etc
I would not own one there.
Audi S3. Sold
Golf R. Sold
Citroen DS3 Dsport. Sold
2016 Skoda Octavia RS Wagon.
autocar.co.uk performance car of the year has 20 contestents incuding the Golf R. PCOTY 2011 is not about bang for your buck as the winner was the Ferrari 458 Italia.
The Golf R came in at 14th - see it at the 3 min mark on the video.
The Renault Megane RS250 managed 9th overall - see it at the 4.30min mark.
The Peugot RC-Z beat them both for driver appeal with 4th place overall.

Maybe we have to draw a distinction between a fast-hatch (Megane RS250, Golf R, Subaru WRX STI) and a hot-hatch (Golf GTI, Focus ST, etc).
Cheers.
