You don't need $10-15k to make a GTI perform like an R. All you need is a $2k remap and to ask two of your mates to sit on the back seat. Oh well, that alone might cost you a six pack but there's still a long way to $10k

I am yet to see anyone post, I bought a GTI cause the R is garbage and then spent the 10 - 15K difference ( if indeed that's what you believe it is) making it perform and look like an R

I tip my hat to the GTIs both new and old when I am out and about and still think they are a neat looking piece of kit. To be clear if the money issue was removed from the table and the keys to an R and a GTI were there for the taking there would be a race for the R keys. The same can be said for all the different car ranges not just VW.. it is human nature

Now back to appreciating both these great cars in whatever form they take
    Yep. Both good cars.

But if I see one more GTI with R black mirrors and LED lights I might get a bit cranky. You didn't buy an R. You bought a GTI. Both good cars. Stop pretending your car is something different. You are as bad as someone who buys an evo bodykit for a lancer.

Pretty sure black mirror caps were going on GTI's way before the R came along. (Disclaimer, bout to get a set to match my Gloss black Ck's)

R LED brake lights are sweet.... LED DRL's are now naff...period. Unless you have an Audi A5.

So true, once an R is rolling there is nothing in it. They do have the hole shot advantage due to the haldex but once both cars are rolling it is suprising how little there is in it.
The power to weight ratio of a stage 1 GTI is a lot better than that of a stock R, but then the R has that crazy AWD traction, rain, hail and shine.

Well when my R gets here I'm going to make some changes.

Detune it to be at GTI power, convert it to FWD, fit GTI OE mags, dump the LED tails for Std GTI tails, spray it Red.

Oh wait.... damn why didn't I just buy a GTI in the first place????

Ausmotive.com wrote a review of the Golf R about a year ago. That's written by an owner of an Audi S3, and several other Golf's etc...
