Yeah WhiteJames, I love reading your write ups, but why don't you start another thread with a Renault heading? It's starting to deviate away from the GTI v R
All very interesting but why keep banging on about the Megane in a GTI v R thread..?

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to work out the "R" is a better motor vehicle than the GTI. Thats why its far more expensive! If the different models weren't better than the underlings (like my 118TSI) then we'd all be driving 77 TSIs. WhiteJames has introduced some alternatives to the Golf v Golf argument and frankly I find it more interesting and informative instead of the blah, blah, blah, of the Golf diatribe.

There's been some conjecture as to why Golf R owners (EA113) are not receiving improvements in driveability when altering the ECU compared to GTI owners (EA88. Part of the problem of the older EA113 has to do with fueling. The other aspect is the type of turbo-charger & scavenging effect. The newer EA888 of the GTI has improved exhaust scavenging due to the exhaust turbine manifold being incorporated into the turbo itself. The tubing into the exhaust turbine also has a say in the scavenging effect for maximum efficiency of the turbo. Other makes such as BMW, Porsche and Renault-Sport take a different path & use twin scroll turbos for greater efficiency -esp. down low in terms of driveability and up high for outright performance. Here's an interesting article that touches on single-scroll, twin-scroll and exhaust turbine manifold design:

Scavenging? Turn it up WJ. There are so many reasons for why a cars turbo is able to spool up slowly/quickly.
What is the wheel made out of (eg ceramic is light).. a/r ratios of the turbo housing.. Ball bearing or not.. Don't just bring out the single vs twin scroll like it's certainly applicable to why the RS turbo doesnt spool as quickly as the GTIs turbo.
Here's a simple to understand version of what I'm talking about FAQ - Ball Bearing Turbo's (do I need them?)
The Rs turbo has less down low.. Cause it's bigger than the K03.. that's the gist of it.. Just like how the GTIs turbo lacks top end for anything serious (even the K04 is pushing it TBH).

Oh boy, here we go again...
Dunno about GTI owners, but I've had my Stage 1 tune for 4000km now and there's a definite improvement in driveability. Of course, you don't drive the R the same way as you would drive the GTI anyway, given the very different nature of the cars. But once you get over that fact (and stop banging on about one Vs the other without first hand experience), the R is a perfectly driveable car in any situation (it's just DIFFERENT and NOT identical to the GTI).
Just the other day on my way home from work, I was thinking how fantastic my R is in traffic (ie, comfortable, not temperamental, quick to respond to a suitable gap in traffic when required)... yet when I turned off and took the last few KM home via the back streets, it was a complete animal (all withint posted speed limits of course). The two key factors? Manual mode (+ S2TPP shifters) and ACC on Sport.
So, jump in an R expecting it to be a GTI on steriods and of course you'll be disappointed with the lag, etc. Actually drive an R for a bit (as opposed to reading/regurgitating internet based "conjecture") and evolve your driving style to match the car? You'll love it. I'm sure if I jumped in a GTI now and tried to drive it like a drive an R, I'd probably be sorely disappointed.
I would just like to say that anyone complaining about lag hasn't driven many cars.
Done 2000kms in under 2 weeks in lots of different traffic and it is really not noticable.
