Well there is no surprises there, only one outstanding is you trading up to the R then all this foreplay is over.. you should also let your invisible friend know you can't get park assist on an R
After much deliberation ... neighbour Ray has finally taken the plunge. See below:
Hi Jim,
After many months of deliberation and driving many cars I’ve decided to replace the R32 with another R. The Golf GTI / R are the best in market when considering overall value, performance, resale value, etc
I’ve ordered a Blue 5 door DSG with the following options -
RNS510 with Dynaudio 300W premium audio with sat nav
Media Device Interface (MDI)
Rear park assist with camera (RVC)
Adaptive chassis control
Vienna leather appointed upholstery
Electrically adjustable driver‘s seat
Talladega 19“ alloy wheels in SILVER
Bluetooth
Ray.
Due May/June 2011.
Now lets see how long he can go before changing anything to the R. My GTI is just fine in stock form after 7mths and 18,000km of ownership - no changes needed.
Cheers
WJ

Just like the counter-terrorists, the R wins!!

Gti ftw
According to the Motor Trend article: 2010 Volkswagen GTI Specs - Motor Trend the weight distribution of the Golf GTI is 62%/38% front to rear. Not sure what variance the Golf R has. Probably explains why the Golf GTI feels bouncy in the rear end without any load or passengers in the rear ... a bit like a ute. The rear end of the Golf GTI does settle down with rear seat passengers. Bear in mind that the motor in the GTI is situated lower than the Golf R. The Golf R motor has to sit higher to accomodate the AWD driveline. This raises the centre of gravity at the front of the Golf R. May explain why the GTI has a more pointy front end and less understeer in corners (larger rear sway bar & XDL also help in this regard).
Cheers

Seems a chipped GTI will give a Stock R a run..

Have a look at this youtube video of Golf R (Stock) -v- MKV Golf GTI (Chipped).
YouTube - Golf R vs Golf Gti
Now compare it to the previous video of the Mark 6 Golf GTI (Chipped) in the previous thread ... see how the turbo in the new EA888 of the Mark 6 spools up much faster than the older EA113 in the Mark V GTI ... same size KO3 turbo. The video makes it tangible for all to see - the Mark 6 EA888 clearly punches hard & faster on intial throttle application. In contrast ... the older EA113 in the MKV GTI is more docile. Another factor is also due to the fuelling, 6 hole injectors & 4 lobe cam actuator for the Bosch fuel pump that good for up to Stage III tune. I have found data indicating that in the 1.8 litre variant of the EA888, the newer KO3 turbo that comprises the inlet manifold as one unit spools up to max boost half a second faster than the older EA113 motor. See it in the video. Part of the reason I'm sticking with the GTI. Also explains why the Mark 6 GTI, with less power than the Golf R, almost matches it in the 80-120kph acceleration test ... instant acceleration that is true to the rawness of the very first Golf GTI back in the 1970's. Generally WJ places much emphasis on suspnesion tune, tyres & brakes rather than outright performance ... but the fast spooling EA888 offers greater convenience and plenty of fun that is just too good to give up.
Sammy ... has the HPA Motorsport KW SHS coilovers & small H&R bars met your expectation in terms of handling/comfort mix? Wavetrac diff is a choice piece of equipment.
Cheers.

I thought the EA888 (certainly the 1.8 variant) had an IHI turbo? Or is it the same thing?
