    A correction is in order:
    Golf R 53.5K + 1.5K for purchase & fitment of a set of aftermarket small solid adjustable H&R sway bars - 55K.
    Cheers.

The comparison is far from useless. Both Renault & VW are aiming at the same customers here, and the COTY judges both know this AND take price into the equation.
The awards are about the best car In a "segment", not the cheapest. Otherwise the c@%pest cars would always get the gong

Well... now that the Polo GTI Pricing is available, maybe there really is more credence to some of the Polo GTI vs Golf GTI discussion that has occured in this thread.

Both cars have similar power to weights which means that the Polo GTI is capable of the same 0 to 100 in 6.9 seconds that the Golf GTI (with DSG) can do.

But the Polo GTI 3 door DSG is $27,790 vs the Golf GTI 3 door DSG at $41,490.
In fact, a fully optioned 5 door Polo GTI drive away will end up still being less than $40k - and that's before negotiation of discount etc.

So yeah. For all those who are saying that the Golf GTI is better "value" than the Golf R - I think that the Polo GTI has just knocked the Golf GTI out of the equation!

Maybe we should rename this thread "Polo GTI vs Golf R".

With those sort of prices, I really don't see how VW can sell the Golf GTI's now. Competition from above and below the model range.

Why so concerned for the GTI? This is just standard market segmentation strategy by VW - very smart by the way. Having offerings at different price points with different value propositions makes perfect sense to me.

There would be buyers for all three, Polo GTI, GTI and R.

Maybe because the Polo is a smaller car than the GTI and people may need or want a slightly larger car and that a base GTI is still about $10k cheaper than a R, (yes I realise as you option up the GTI the difference decreases). Also people may still prefer to buy a GTI with one or two options rather than say a fully optioned 118TSI, if buying a GTI wasn't an option.

Not a bad pricing but don't know why you'd fully option a polo as it defeats the purpose of getting a cheaper car (and you don't see that money again with resale).

Besides having a much smaller car the 7 speed DSG isn't as good as the 6 speed version (assume the DSG box is the same as the lower end models of Golf, not what would be in the RS3 etc).

Maybe we should rename this thread "Polo GTI vs Golf R".
Or start a new thread for the Polo GTI vs everything..
