So to add to the debate... and my experience i spose, I drove Fab's MK5 GTi with a tune etc in it.. and i was pretty much converted there and then, the DSG, performance and brakes all felt just right. I'm coming out of a 500HP VE SS [6 Speed Man] which I love.. the sound and torque etc. I even loved the recent session at Sandown in the GTi Time Trial.. (which I won *cough and got a nice little Red GTi Trophy, hey Fab ;p)

As soon as the R was released I knew I wanted that over the GTi.. because the GTi was already a great car, but the R just has the 'R' Factor and crazy performance figures, enough 'differentiators' over the GTi and for me it was the AWD DSG Combo.. and it was in my price range.. in fact I was even considering something a lot more expensive. I LOVE the Recaros Fab has in his..

They are both great cars IMO and I guess im about to become a convert lol

    Cheers
    Curtis.

"Cough" um yes, the pr*ck was quick in the time trials, absolutely thrashed the Mk6 Gti and was rewarded with bloody good times.
Hope your little model is sitting in a prominent place in your office old mate...

There is no doubt about it Curtis, you will miss the grunt of your VE SS, and even the sound, BUT, the power delivery, grunt, and thrills you will get from your R will feed your appetite.........The Golf R fits the bill hands down.........bring it on, and quickly!!!!

    Haha!
Just like a BMW 135i driver would see a Golf R and think "gee I wish I had that instead", .
its all relative and most people would prefert something more expensive.

must be a good feeling blowing away the fastest family sedans LOL.

Delusion then. No disappointment and what happens when the same money is spent on the turbo Fords?
Stock the R is slower. The only smoking you'll see is what comes off the Ford's rear wheels as they look for traction.

I think maybe you're getting confused with some of the Golf R manual times or something like that?
    A Golf R DSG with only a Stage 1 ECU does 0 to 100 in ~4.68
This has now been verified by multiple sources.

In the Motor Hot Tuner Challenge a Ford XR6T with with $18,379 of modifications (ECU, Intercooler, Exhaust, Suspension, Brakes, Wheels, Tyres, Short shifter, and Injectors) only managed 4.95.

What about a $88k Harrop Engineering (Supercharged) Commodore SS-V? 4.75
What about a $88k BTA Motorsports Tuned FPV F6 (in the $20k of mods)? 4.61
Or the winner in the Aussie segment, a $90k Walkinshaw Performance SS-V Sportswagen (inc $30k of mods). 4.50 seconds.

So yeah... what happens if you DID only spend $1,500 (the cost of the APR Stage I R ECU) on those cars instead of the $20k to 30k they did to get those times? Well, clearly, they'd be seeing the back of your R as it left them behind

+1. That is a great article, and sums up the two cars quite well. About time a journo managed to balance out the qualities of the two models accurately!
