lol so WJ just looked at a Polo GTI and it instantly became 40% vs the Golf GTI at 50% which he has spend hundreds of hours driving and tens of thousands of words justifying why it is best.....

    There you go peoples.

In respect to the fuelling of the Golf R, it feels very much like the MKV GTI, rather than a beefed up version of the Mark 6 GTI. From Golf R to Golf GTI is like going from carburator to fuel injection or old style fuel injection that varies fuel metering every 500rpm as opposed to a modern fuel injection system that can vary fuel metering every 50rpm. This relates to engine feel/turbo responsiveness & general economy, rather than outright power (NSACAR's make heaps of power and run carbies) - Golf R and MKV GTI seem to be more one dimensinal in it's fuel delivery - which does feel more linear in delivery.

After visiting the Sydney Motor Show, my values have changed again:

    Golf GTI: 50%
    Polo GTI: 40%
    Golf R : 10%

Polo is a bit cramped in the rear passenger seats and luggage compartment and I'm told it has torsen beam rear suspension (as does Civic Type R, Megane, Clio), as opposed to the GTI/R mutilink sub-frame rear suspension that should generally cope better on unsettling features around mid-corner. Mid corner bumps are in abundance in NSW so multilink rear suspension should prove it's worth in this regard. Torsen beam suspension imo is not fully independent suspension, but does add rigidity to the chassis. The Golf R at the AIMS wins my vote for best looking hatchback.

    Cheers

Isn't having a more linear delivery better than one that isn't?

This also probably another aspect of the car that explains why the Golf R (like the MkV GTI) feels more fun to drive than the MkVI GTI.

I think WJ is saying that he thinks the MkVI GTI feels smoother than the MkV and R... not entirely sure though.

Either way, can't say I agree with that assessment myself (R always seemed very smooth and linear to me, excepting the greater apparent lag below ~2,200; after all, it is running the k04 and more boost).

I wouldn't be giving a car a weighting without driving it.

    Are you kidding me?
You subject us to pages and pages of road test comparisons between the GTI and the R in which you refer to the smallest detail of each car, power delivery, suspenion damping (which is seemingly all meaningless because the GTI wins everything with you becuase it is a tad lighter), and now you're happy to give a car you've never driven 40% and an R 10%??

The polo GTI has always been an enjoyable car.
You don't have to have AWD and huge power for a car to be enjoyable (read lotus, mx5 etc) and becasue it is smaller than the golf it is nimble and chuckable.

You would have a huge cost saving over an R and get an awesome driving experience.

I can only imagine how one would go after you go stage 1 plus good tyres and suspension work.

But how many people were raving around the last Polo GTI in DSG form? And now it's got 7 gears. All the reviews I've read of the new one have panned it for being boring and indecisive with the gearbox.

    Unrelated to the quote above:

So, everyone's entitled to their opinion, which is why I've not bagged out the essays on here before... but, I'm allowed mine too So, +1 on Fab_R's and HPSOV's comments... just getting painful now, even though I skip over most of it. Hands up how many people bought an R and wish they'd bought a GTI? <insert tumbleweeds & crickets> All these made up, subjective metrics, mean nothing to anyone but the person posting them. Whether you truely have GTI-love or R-envy, it's just painful now.

Simple solution, exactly what Corey said, get what YOU want...

Simple solution, get the manual and you have a driver engaging vehicle with a pretty awesome power to weight ratio.

It's funny though, i see these particular threads the other way, not GTI love or R Envy, but R fanboy's trying to defend their purchase and putting down all other vehicles that come up as a competitor.

That's all i'll say on the matter or Corey will ban me for life.
