The GOLF R exhaust sounds better, hands down WJ. Havent heard or met anyone other than yourself who thought otherwise. But I am sure there might be many on this website. Otherwise a good effort and interesting write up. I must say I enoy reading your reviews.

Now I reckon you need to buy a GOLF R and I'll take your unbiased choice seriously.

    "Fuel delivery felt more precise".

Do you mean it had a more linear map? more responsive? It probably was, as it has a smaller turbo and 2 wheels to turn. Like I have previously mentioned, half the excitement is due to the experience as opposed to the actual performance.

You might not have tried though in your test, to run around in the wet. It is there I believe will you see the power of AWD. As I am not much of a trackster myself (in my own cars), I believe the benefits of having these things is just fun to have.

Sort of like why most people went a GTI, and not a TSI118, or TS118 and not a TRENDLINE..

I thought the GTI is also a car that is not really needed, as it has bags of power and overly, if not too capable for anywhere I would drive.

I think you need to really ask yourself what results you were intending to find with your comparison, and maybe how clear and reasonable they actually were.

What do you mean by this? I found his review and opinion easy to follow.

I found the review easy to follow as well!!

I believe the way the article is written its very biased to be frank.

You want to say that the GTI is more practical, more torquey, and a better overall ride over its rival? the R.

Thats fine, but you cant say that it sounds better than an R whilst also being the more sensible of the 2.

The R is the more performance orientated model. No confusing that. I just get the feeling that WJ maybe trying to pry open the best of both worlds, where you may not in this case.

Its the slower more refined GTI against the more 'tude of the sportier R.

Its not the Rawness of the GTI against the poor little old R.

I hope you can see what I mean and how it might be sounding to a lot of R owners.

.............it is easy to follow, but can't help but form the opinion that it is more about justifying his GTI than reviewing the R!

WJ gives his time to post one of the more well informed and well written posts on this forum, and you decide to accuse him of bias. Instead of playing the man, if you disagree strongly enough with what he has posted why don't you directly address with WJ the area where your own experience of driving the R and the GTI back to back differs?

    x 2

WJ spends a lot of time putting together such detailed reviews and I respect what he has to say over 99.9% of the posters on here.

I always enjoy WJ's posts, this one included, thanks for sharing.
I do agree with the post above though. The tests did go to some lengths to highlight 'differences' as 'weaknesses'. Of course that's fine, everyone has a different focus, budget, values and opinions.

I appreciate and respect WJ's post, but he does only say 'would I buy ....' and the conclusions are only his own. Not fact, and it certainly not automatically right or valid for everyone else.

hooba's test drive notes are a good counterpoint, where I read that he was impressed by the R's differences, and gives more credit where it performs more strongly.

    Drive's review is similar.

Motor are set to test the R next issue too.

Just read any of them as one mans opion on things, enjoy the read, make whatever you like of the views expressed then make up your own mind.

Looking forward to a drive of the R myself.

it is so funny reading this thread... especially tiguan being a better faster car than a golf R lol

Even at 239kw, it is not faster than a stock golf R. Maybe in a straight line... but as soon as it hits a small bend, the tiguan will tip over. I can guarantee you that at whichever race course, tiguan can have 300kw, and it would still be slower around the track.

Plus which one would be more enjoyable to drive? pretty obvious. Tiguan is a great car don't get me wrong, but it is a different type of car, you can put a twin turbo and 500kw, and i still wouldn't pick a tiguan over golf R.
