C'mon guys! Each Mk of Golf, GTI, R-Line pulls different emotional strings on different people.

We're all part of the same family

Yes, I'm about to own a Golf R, but I enjoy seeing all kinds of Golf's on the road!

As Corey have pointed out, it's not impossible to get moderate discounts on the R. I took delivery of my R on 30th of June (had pre-ordered in Dec 09) and got around $4k discount which I was pretty happy with. However, I did find that the Qld dealers laugh at your face when I had asked about discount.

Agree, not that easy to get a decent discount up here as there aren't 11 dealerships like NSW/VIC, but you should still be able to get 11% off with corporate discount or a bit of haggling.

Those who want the latest first will always pay the most.

There is only three dealerships in Perth, first one I went to offered me $500 off the purchase of two cars, needless to say I went elsewhere with Dermot giving me a nice little discount and making an easy sale you can always buy interstate, brand new R at the wangara dealership is headed for SA so there are options there and transportation isn't that much as I have shipped two of my cars interstate.

    1. True, just like the 135i is better than the R for the extra spend.
    2. Size vs Price Plasmas are very good.
    3. No it isn't lol.

    Morning people...

I have been reading this thread with great interest and at times, confusion... I am a first time VW owner after coming from various brands of cars...

I have always loved the R32 Golf, even from the Mk4 days and when I first saw the R.... I was, well, a little aroused..haha. However, when I looked at the pricing of it and with the extras I wanted, it was just getting too steep for me to justify the spend... The thing that got me was the interior and especially that god damn s*xy steering wheel...

Then I went and sat in a new GTI and realised that the interior was basically the same except fot the obvious stitching and fabric seats... I therefore looked into buying a GTI.... Test drove one and fell in love very quickly with how much fun this thing was to drive. So, the order was placed!

Now people have been talking about how the price isn't that big when you add the extras to the GTI that are standard on the R.... But I didn't actually add anything that was standard except for the 18" wheel option, which was only $1,200 (oh and the R LED Tails )... I wanted leather, sat nav, sunroof, bluetooth...all extras that needed to be added to the R. Then there was the problem that I would have been slugged for luxury car tax on the R once adding those extra... So, the difference would have been easily $10K.

Now to my point.... If I had of had the budget, I would have more than likely bought an R, but I didn't and can say right now that I adore my GTI and it is a ball and pleasure to drive.

P.S. I have to say that the MK5 GTI is not a patch on the new GTI in terms of looks... I can not comment on the driving as I never drove one, but my girlfriend has a MY07 Jetta turbo, which has the same engine as the GTI....and that is no where near the same or as good as my new MK6 GTI.

    Cheers

I beg to disagree and so do many other people wrt to your opinion on looks. But it is subjective thing. I personally find the Mk6 GTI looks like a Corolla from the back. The front is ok but I much prefer the agressive looks of the R over the GTI.

As to Jetta vs Golf, they are not the same, one is a sedan (with suspension tuned for comfort) and the other is a hatch (with stiffer suspension). Also the Mk6's GTI Engine is prone to rattle and drinks copious amounts of oil when driven hard. Problems that don't exist with the MkV GTI's and R's EA113 engine.

Also with the Mk6 GTI (and R), when you turn off ESP, it isn't really turned off (nanny mode - kicks in when you go beyond a certain limit). With the MkV GTI, when ESP is turned off, it's really turned off.

I used to own a MKV GTI with 6K worth of suspension & wheels upgrades. Now I own a MK6 GTI with DCC & 18" wheels.
    Cheers
