Just a small correction, the R has the older and race proven 113 engine with strengthened internals (almost the same engine as the S3 - just minor differences e.g. intercooler).

It is the GTI that has the new you beaut 888 engine which drinks oil when pushed hard on the track.

Are you sure the new 888-engined GTI drinks oil when pushed hard on the track?
At the rate that the oil is used, I assumed it uses GPS to determine when it is at a race track and then just opens a valve on the bottom of the engine to let the oil run out! lol

How's the wait going, mustn't be too long now?.. funny this thread is still going if the R is obviously better (just kidding)...

I'd have to say that a golf R with some motorsports, against a different car altogether which funnily shares the hardware that is, the S3 with motosports, is preference. To me the s3 definitely doesn't look as good. I test drove and my gf didn't like it's looks either.

BUT, it's the better car offering more class and brand image and maybe even better made from my readings. But it ain't faster than an R. And the acceleration out of the box, as well as the tuning potential shown by cars like Guy_Hs was what I was up for.

The prob is we are not talking about whether the S3 is better than the R, we are talking about whether an A3 is better than an S3, be clear on that. I'd just like to know why everyone wants the LED on their GTI? I leave that though before I get 10 more pages of baphoonism.

But an R8? Please don't mention that car even in the same breath as these comparative econo boxes.

If you are not regretting your purchase, good on ya. But there are a few people here that are. They are trying very hard to justify to themselves and others that their car is the better buy. Which it is not.
    Hey triode12,

I suspect my posts have been misinterpreted by more than a few people... and given the context, I suppose I shouldn't be surprised. I'm not trying to suggest that by any objective benchmark that the GTI is better than the R - I mean, come on, it has clear advantages for heaven's sake. These points are not in contention, and arguing over them is pointless. I am not saying the GTI is "better" - anyone who assumes this and then calls me an idiot has completely missed the point. Meh - their loss.

What I am trying to say is that I personally think, at this time, the GTI suits me better - even though it has less peak power, less grip, and other deficiencies when compared to the R. Subjectively, I prefer it. Saying this does constitute a justification of my purchase, and that is something that has been criticised - and it is only that I take offence at.

R buyers - enjoy your superior cars. I'm confident you'll enjoy them, and prefer them! Just please don't criticise me for my decision, or my contribution to this forum by explaining my decision. I'm not trying to say I'm better than you, so just get over it.

Anyway, last post from me on this. I'm over being flamed.

According to GuyH they do...too lazy to find and post the post where he said so.
They drink oil when pushed hard is what I should have said.

    Adam,

I know you didn't mean to say that the GTI was better than the R and that you are not one of those who regret buying the GTI - I'm sure the others know that too and the comments were not directed at you per se.

I don't think the R owners are criticising your choice of car, some of us are just tired of reading posts justifiying of why the GTI is a better buy/car over the R -posts which were not made by you. I think your reaction to my post put you in a position to be flamed or perhaps feel like you were being targetted unfortunately.

In retrospect, I should have said that performance wise, the R is the better car period. I should have been more specific in my initial post.

    Lets move on.

You'll be waiting a while mate, check the above quote... the EA888 is just simply not designed for the high performance that demands AWD.
