hmmm all I can say is wow.. this conversation is almost as heated as the Holden v Ford ( and potentially as pointless)...

It really is the lens you throw over the proposition.. I don't drive a car to the limits.. made that mistake once and wont do it again.. so all the science around how it performs under certain conditions were irrelevant to me.. The value proposition played a big role in my decision making process however in the end my wife summed it up for me after I proposed the GTI is the better value / bang for your buck.. she said "I would always wish I got the R because of how it made the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end just after I turned the key... "

Having said that.. if the GTI does it for those that got one all power to you cause that's what really makes us tick..

If the Reno Clio 200 doesn't have curtain airbags, then maybe it has benefit in that situation for your head, but if the seats are as good as you complain, the side airbag is not doing anything for your torso.
That may or may not be the case depending on the force or trajectory of any crash, but that was not the point I was trying to make. I'm sure a side airbag would be a good supplemental system to what the bolster already offers, if only to avoid criticism on VW's part.

Thank you reminding us that this place is about having fun.

Interesting that there has been very little comment on "But satnav $2500? Bluetooth $495 plus whatever the dealer wants to fit it? When it's factory-standard on many models costing less than half this? C'mon VW!".

If VW wants to increase its volume, then it should stop charging for options like the premium germans.

Have you seen what a side airbag looks like? If the trajectory of the crash forced the driver forward and right AND the seltbelt let you go there AND the steering wheel airbag prevented you from going there, the side airbag will be USELESS because you'll miss it! It's not much larger than the side bolsters are on the motorsport seats! lol

This is from a Trendline or Comfortline MKV Golf with regular seats with minimal bolsters (i.e. much smaller than the side bolsters on the GTI/R seats or motorsports setas)

As I've said before, we've got 1000's of cases in motorsports accidents which show side airbags are not required. If you think that this is not the same situation on the roads, provide some evidence (I've been looking too...)

How true! Although both very different vehicles, I was actually deciding between the GTI and Mazda CX-7 when purchasing. The CX-7 Luxury included leather, sat nav, 9 speaker bose, sunroof, chrome trims, bluetooth, 19" rims etc all as standard. As much as I thought the CX-7 interior looked and felt better with more equipment, the GTI gave me more driving pleasure being used to owning/driving pocket-rockets. Getting off topic here.

    Adam,

If you are not one of the people that fall into that category, why are you taking offence?
If you are not regretting your purchase, good on ya. But there are a few people here that are. They are trying very hard to justify to themselves and others that their car is the better buy. Which it is not.

except it's more like the SS owners saying their car is better than the clubsport cause it got less weight, and heaps of potential!!

Or the GT-P owners getting told they should have gone the XR-8.

Does everything you need they say.

Should have gone the 77TSI then, I reckon. Perfect.

How about a big suck of €€ ££££!!!!

This thread has gotten full of Hermans, talking ABSOLUTE NONSENSE.

Next it'll be how living in some ****hole, is 'quite the experience' compared to living in a nicer place. Awesome stuff keep it up.

Firstly, Yeah, I have been in a side impact so if for a few seconds before it deflated I have seen and smelt and felt the hot gas of a side airbag.

Corey, I'm not getting into some penile measurement contest with you, but if you think that a pissy side bolster on a recaro seat (whether it be VW OR Renault) developed for a road car with standard 3 point seatbelts (and therefore not the same as a full kitted out race recaro with proper harness as you have pointed out) is a sound substitute for a side airbag system then I think you need to show me some Ncap footage of a vehicle with them in a side impact (I too can't seem to find ncap footage that proves for or against).

Physics sucks donkey balls buddy, pretty sure my back and sides still slid side to side in the R recaro's that I tested, around gradual corners, now imagine the cheeky inertia produced in a side impact - you slide toward the door, door comes toward you. If you think that bolster is going to provide you with a loving touch of softness at the peak of Issac Newtons finest laws when you truly need it most, you're joshing yourself.

    YouTube - Golf 6 crashtest

1.06 - check at the point of impact just how fast the seat moves from under the dummy. i know it's a stock 77tsi seat but I still don't believe a bolster in a recaro seat which is developed for a road car with three point seatbelts (especially the wider backrest of the golf r recaro) is going to do all the magic you say it will.

I'd rather have the bags there there than not, and joe public ain't as smart as you Corey, they are the pr!cks who think putting an Airbag and a seatbelt in a GreatWall SA220 makes it safe.... lol

If you bought the Recaros for your R then good for you. Enjoy them, I'm jealous as hell my budget didn't stretch to em. My original point was that you were too fast to discount the renault seats in your defence of the VW's and thats fine. But I'm not interested in going further into it. Let the girls fight over whether the R or the GTi is the better car...

This isn't even what the thread topic is about so I'm done on this convo.
