Ok here comes the beginners question.
When I'm driving on a wet road and something? jumps out infront of me I jump on the brakes and swerve. How does AWD help me in that case?

Well true to a point, I would suggest that the erratic nature of your reaction would be better countered by an AWD when trying to recover from a swerve.. but mostly it would be other factors such as speed, weather , road conditions and the ability of the driver which contribute to the result

Funnily enough it's the by-product of AWD systems that might help a little more. I.e. the AWD car is a bit heavier and usually more equally weighted/balanced. The tail is probably less likely to step out in a swerve, or the nose less likely to understeer.
Very subjective of course but 2 identical cars 2WD vs AWD in that situation, the AWD is probably a few percent more 'planted', but not due to the AWD system itself which is only engaged under acceleration.

People have that misconception no matter what car they drive! I have a GT-P so I can go faster because I've got Brembo's, I can go harder in my GTi because of it's excellent TCC, I can recover from oversteer in my 135i with RWD etc...
My point was that in every day driving conditions, if you had a loss of traction event (like for like, and under road rules etc), an AWD system will offer more stability.
Also, whether FWD, RWD or AWD, the same principle exists in that usually what ever got you into trouble will get you out of trouble, whether it be lifting off (brake or accellerater), or applying (brake or accellerator). I don't think you're stuffed if you skid in an AWD car but now in a FWD one?

happs, what car have you got? (just out of curiosity)
(love the name btw - one of my favourite wineries!)
Golf GTI MY11 Mk6 Reflex Silver 18inch MDI RSC BT Dark Tint G|Techniq - Buya!
Bingo! Not in any way related to the winery (just a nickname), but the winery is a good one, and I have a few bottles at home they've named after me! ;p
At the moment a Mazda3 SP23 (MT), prior to that a XR6 Turbo (AT). Next car, still tossing up between the GTi and R? (leaning towards the R). Osborne Park dealer told me just today the wait for the R is now 4-5 months.
Love the XR6T, big and very powerful, and fantastic bang for your buck value and great for long hauls, but just too thirsty in peak hour daily commute and the size was wasted with only 1 occupant 99% of the time. The Mazda has actually been a brilliant car, never missed a beat, cheap to maintain, good levels of refinement and although pokier than the base 3's, it's certainly not a sports oriented car, just a bit more powerful.
