"The Golf R is infinitely superior to the GTI."

    There, that settles this discussion.

Interesting thread. I'm currently looking at replacing my modified 3 MPS with a GTI + APR Stage 1 flash but the R is just sitting there in the back of my mind...

I'm thinking that traction would be nice for a change but I'm wondering if it's worth the $10k premium.

Get the R, the MPS has a 195kw's standard right? A modified GTI barely has that. Get the R

Most people buying VW Golf's rarely get cars without a single option. Have a look at what options you are thinking of adding to the GTI, and then see whether they're included "as standard" in the Golf R. If so, the difference can end up being less than $4400, for which you're getting all the improvements that the R brings... of course, if you are one of the rare people who is literally getting a standard car, then yes, the R is $9500 more!

Good call. I'm going through the threads here trying to figure out what options I would get (if any).

If the base R comes with most of what I want for around $5k difference then it's a no brainer that the R is the way to go.

Plus I just saw the numbers for the R with an APR Stage 1 flash...hmmm. That power would be very nice!

I was one of those rare people (although I did spend money on getting 18" rims 6mths after buying the car) and if I had the extra $9.5k would have bought the R.

They are both fast enough to lose your license, just depends how much you want to spend. Around town they would be pretty similar.

I came from a modded 3 MPS. Personally I dont think even the premium for a GTI over the MPS is worth it. Add another $5 to 10K for an R? No, I wouldnt. I miss my MPS a lot. The R is certainly a better value proposition than the R32 was so I can see why people consider it.

I have recently driven the GTI and R back to back so I could determine the worth of spending the extra ( and it is not $10K after negotiations) and I must say the GTI was most impressive, I then ran with the R and OMG it is definitely a different animal in so many respects apart from options and bling. I could write a page on why the R is a better option but where it all comes undone is fit for purpose and personal financial circumstances.

Both are fantastic units and if I couldnt spring the readies the GTI would have done just fine.. but if the inner self wants that little bit more on all levels then you really cant go past the R
