    GTI -v- R

Bob is scratching his head as to why his manual Golf R can't pull away from that pesky DSG Golf GTI. Well Bob, minus 140kg and an EA888 motor will do that for you.

At what point is it prudent to forsake the GTI for the Golf R. Well tuning for extra power is one benefit. Stock for stock, as the video shows, the GTI may be the more prudent choice.

2012 Volkswagen Golf R versus Golf GTI Nose to Tush Drag Race - YouTube

It does raise a pertinent question in respect to my wish list for the GTI:

    1. 15-20% stiffer springs with matched dampers - KW DCC coilovers = $4000.
    2. Mechanical LSD - $3500.
    3. Bigger Brembo brakes - $4000.
    4. Recaro seats - $5000.

Total: $16500 of enhancements .... or ... Buy the Renault Megane RS250 with all this installed from the factory with warranty for less than 50K and save yourself the drama.

Aside from that, the Golf GTI Edition 35 is for those that want a FWD Golf R.

    Cheers.

WJ, Sammy was able to perform these enhancements on my GTI for less than half of the price you have listed... heck, for that price he's even got a k04.

    Bilstein PSS10 $2000 ($300 install)
    Wavetrac LSD $1000 ($1200 install)
    RacingBrake BBK $1450 (group buy)
OEM seats, they are more than supportive enough, for race days i'll throw in a $1000 Recaro fixed back bucket.

Thats $6950, then throw in $5000 for the K04... thats $12,000 in mods for a GTI that will hand even a stage 2 R its backside...

    It's whitejames. facts don't matter

He will bring up a friend, possibly called Jonathon, who is looking at an R but as a result of those modifications and test driving has decided to get a Commodore Sportswagon.

This, will of course, last for 4 months and at least 47 posts involving at least 12 visits to a dealer and once cancelled order, in which the dealer will be allowed to keep the deposit.

Is the Golf GTI a good drivers car?

Is the Golf GTI a good drivers car? No. Well not according to Car & Driver Magazine (car&driver.com) Best Drivers Car Under 40,000 USD:

Ultimately, though, the VW’s body control, transient behavior, and understeer-heavy balance are also subpar.

The USA are still running different handling packages for their cars though right?
If so, the article is not really relevant, except for our few USA members.

Interesting. I wonder if ACC (sport) mode would make a difference to the review.

just test drove the GTI and R back to back. what a difference! i went in expecting to like the GTI but wow what a drone... just cruising along normally in D, the GTI made an unbearable exhaust note hum that never faded into the background. it was also very skittish over bumps and had a general thin feeling in places. the R on the other hand had no drone, much less noise, and was much more stable on some challenging twists and turns. the GTI was more responsive, but the refinement of the R (and the exhaust note!) won me over quite convincingly.

now to go to the the official "i have ordered" thread to make a post...
