I didn't know that about the 90tsi anyway, so still would have got it wrong.

So it's a water/air heat exchanger? Excellant. At least there would be better consistancy in power & fuel economy rather than cold days making it chew through fuel & hot days putting a dampener on power.

Yeah, is an air-to-liquid intercooler. The coolant system is being pumped through the intercooler. The coolant also cools the turbocharger. The coolant is then cooled by the radiator as per normal.

Although this thread has served its purpose in respect to the decision on upgrading from a Mark 6 GTI or Mark 5 R32 to a Golf R, with me sticking with the Mark 6 GTI and Ray rescinding his order on the Golf R and sticking with the R32. Ray has gone all retro and is now considering a well to fully optioned low mileage competition pack auto six banger BMW M3 Coupe for around 60-70K - going from one great sounding six cylinder to another great sounding six cylinder. It's all about the driver involvement.
