For sure. Once you go even Stage 1 and are going at it on a track or motorkhana with a GTI you then notice how much time you lose by spining the front inside tyre. You dont so much notice on the street but once the tyres get warm and gooey and you are driving at 10/10ths you then wish you had the AWD, for the stopwatch however not so much for driver envolvement.
Just depends on each individuals wants and needs and also the intended use of the car. I would seriously consider going the GTI and then slowly spending the extra coin on some tastefull mods which would scare the odd R... something about the MKVI GTI looks as well that just grab me, especially in CW and the extra envolvement the car requires due to no AWD

I agree sort of. I prefer my R for sure, But one thing I loved about the GTI is the 2 little red stripes on the front which look great and finish of the front end. And also I like the fact that I could get wheel spin in the GTI. On the test drives I went on (heaps) the GTI was mad fun to just quickly drop the gears (DSG) round a corner and just watch it hook up and slide almost like a RWD. They are great cars to drive thats for sure..

And the quick zippy windy up was kind cool for below 60km/h stuff that you cant get in an R which is heavier and has too much grip.

Agree with all that but yeah, as if u would regret buying the R at the end of the day. I will decide on the day I upgrade probably Lol

Those red stripes are awesome, contrast so well with some of the paint colors. The R would have been so much better looking with blue callipers IMO and a slight amount of blue in the background of the R on the badging.... just to break up the blandness.

Unless it also had ACC, Satnav and MDI it is still 5- 6k overpriced

Damn, if only I knew the door rubbers are getting water stained... Every 2-3 moths I have to use some magic Meguiar juice to wipe them, the maintenance of these things is simply ridiculous! I should have got a Golf GTI or R, waste gate turbo rattle or even DSG induced thrills are nothing compared to water stains on door rubber

You said nothing about how the water stained thing drives though. This s not a detailing thread after all.

Did you read the bit about the fact that there was a pool of water (from being parked out the back of the dealership) in the demo Clio ?

It lacked sufficient grunt/torque. OK if you are driving on level ground but it struggled to get above 90km/hr on the drive up Mt White on the OPH (a Golf GTI does a 100km/hr with ease). Handling was superb but that was about it. Not my cup of tea. Wack a snail into it (to up the torque) and I'd probably like it better. But that still doesn't solve the poor resale of these things.

Indeed. I got a similar spec (minus the DSG but with bluetooth and Dynaudio) for well below that.

    Audi S3/MK7 Golf R?

Resale value of the low volume selling niche euro-brands are generally in the same boat imo. Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Renault, Peugeot, Volvo, and Saab. There’s a limited market for these types of vehicles when new, which in turn creates a limited second hand buyers market, unlike the cheaper versions of the Audi, BMW and Mercedes that sell in much greater numbers new & used.

Renaults do not sell in great numbers in this country and the RS versions of the Clio and Megane create the impression that Renault is relying more on its two halo RS models. The basic bread & butter Megane, unlike the Golf, do not sell in any meaningful numbers in country. Having said that, Golf GTI is ubiquitous which creates a lot more competition when it comes time to sell on the second hand market. If you have the right mix of options & colour, luck may be on your side.

On another issue, Ray still hasn’t received his build date/VIN for his Golf R which is scheduled to arrive on 1st June 2011. He’s been told to expect changes on his model, which may be a MY12 build. Delivery should be around August 2011 with any luck. Some say that DCC and Dynaudio will be shelved on the MY12 (rumour only atm). Should it be the case that DCC is no longer available on the upgraded MY12 Golf R, Ray may cull his order. He’s not fussed about losing Dynaudio, but DCC makes part of the compelling case for an upgrade from the R32 to the Golf R. I’ve suggested that perhaps he consider the next generation Audi S3, which should only be just around the corner.

The release of the next generation Mark 7 based Audi A3 has been delayed by 6-9 months. It should’ve gone on sale about now in Europe and start of 2012 for Australia. I’m inclined to think that if VW cannot keep pace with current orders of the Golf R, they may have limited chance of creating enough stock for dealers to see out a delayed Mark 7 Golf R/Audi S3 release some time in the future. This may force both Audi and VW to bring forward the Mark 7 S3/Golf R releases. I can’t see VAG building the Mark 6 alongside the Mark 7 ... economies of scale and production facilities would make a strong case for not doing so. In a nutshell, the Audi A3/MK7 Golf may have been delayed, but perhaps not the Mark 7 version Audi S3/GTI/R. Ray disagrees in that you will not see the Mark 7 Golf R until at least 2014. I reckon it may be sooner than that. Audi are already releasing images of the new Mark 7 based Audi A3 sedan.

    Cheers
    WJ

After struggling to sell a S3 for about 5 months, and seeing friends with GTI's and R32's sell pretty quick, I know which I would prefer to be selling...
