The two that I was most impressed with were the Porsche and the MX5. Get that little Mazda on twisty hills and it is very hard to beat that feeling. No golf comes close to that car-driver-as-one feeling
I had a mate who owned one of the first generation MX-5s. He lived in Bathurst for a few years during our university days, so when I visited him we often headed up to Mount Panorama for a few hot laps. Loads of fun, very nimble.

Another mate who has a Golf R also has an MX-5 and he loves it too. This guy used to contribute regularly to this forum but not so much anymore. Russell, are you reading this?

Well after waiting almost 1 year I finally picked up the R over the weekend.

    Rising Blue
    DSG
    Sunroof
    ACC
    19" Black Talladegas
    RVC

The car puts a smile on my face every time I get in and it is only reinforced but the sweet engine note.

The car is a bit misleading in that I do notice a bit of lag when in D mode, but once it passes 2k RPM you just feel the surge of power come through. I guess I could get around this by using the manual mode more often or leaving in S. The car is just plain fun in S although I couldn't drive it in this mode all the time.

I love how in manual mode the car down shifts as you slow down as you approach lights etc.

Some niggles that I have found with the car

Would like to have a more useful centre console
There should have been a clock on the stereo
Would have like most customisation of the MFD e.g. being able to see current speed on the same line as the temp display.
Would have been useful if the side mirrors had memory built in, instead of just memory for reverse dipping
IPOD set on repeat without being able to change it

    Cool Features
    The drive / power
    DSG
    Reverse dipping mirrors
Bottle holders on the side of the door
    Bluetooth

Despite the fun I am having with the car, I'm not too sure if I would have kept with the order if I knew I had to wait a year for it. I think I just need to drive it more, although I think the wife has spent more time with the car.

I don't think I could have waited that long. Mine is the same spec except for roof. I found the <2000rpm (more like 2300rpm) lag a bit hard to get used to, especially coming from a MKV Golf GTI, but the car does seem to "free up" a bit after a few ks. A tune certainly helps.

Agree re centre console, its useless, so I fitted under seat drawers for extra storage.

You could buy one of these and you could display temp and speed P3Cars.com » VW MK6 Vent Integrated Digital Interface

There's a good reason for your wife driving it more than you, she probably loves it. For me, the more I drive it, the more I love it!

First congrats on getting the beast and also on your patience, 9 months killed me but 12 is a real test. Don't look back it is worth the wait and over time you will appreciate how well the car settles in. It has been said many times but there is a bit of relearning with a DSG and if you haven't experienced turbo before then the adjust ment from an NA takes a while.

A tune will get you closer to what you expect but I find now more than ever the car is smoother after 18 months of ownership than when I first got it.

there is a clock on the stereo...

enable it via the settings button, and I think it's in the display menu.

at least you can on an RNS....

I also recommend a stage 1 tune such as offered by APR. It makes a big difference to performance and lessens the turbo lag.

hmm...I thought I played with all the settings and didn't come across the clock setting, might only be available with the sat nav...

will have a look at it again

Will consider a stage 1 tune a bit later, still getting used to the car

This is my first turbo car so I guess I got to get use to the lag, although it isn't that noticeable.

Will be getting opticoat this weekend.

Congrats on the purchase, fantastic car.

Sounds like you went through what I went through, ordered in Oct 2011, was still waiting last month. Didn't really mind, was the only car I wanted so I had no choice, i wasn't about to compromise on my drive. But when you wait 12 months, it just makes it more likely that something else can creep in and catch your attention. They should consider this.

Have fun with it, great things.

    Thanks

Enjoying the car now, I guess that is the important thing.

The annoying this was that VWA have no idea what was going on. I called up in Jul 12 asking for an update and they said it was still a dealer order and don't know when it was going to be built.

I called the dealer and said given the wait I wanted to cancel the order, they said to give them a day to follow up. Few hours later they call back and say that the car was actually built and was waiting to be loaded on the ship.

After given the VIN was daily check up to see where the car was, suck that it took the long way to get to Perth

Have you got your car yet?

I was tempted with the Focus ST and even thinking about the 328i although the price was significantly higher
