Saw a Golf R on CarSales (Melbourne) for $36k (76,000kms). I'd be a lot more tempted if it wasn't a boring grey colour.
There's also a nicer black one with RNS510 for $42k with unsightly roof racks (can they be taken off?).
The RB26DETT in the GTR (R32-R34) is a beast of an engine, even stock, but as you say, the unmodified Skyline is just a myth these days. A mate of mine's gone down the larger turbos/3.0 block/forged internals path with his R32; there's tons of lag down low to the point where an R would be all over it off-boost or off the line if the GTR wasn't being launched hard, but once this thing comes on strong you feel like you're being pushed into next week. Proper supercars would struggle to stay with it in a straight line.

Doesn't look terrible, but a bit odd. Good if you want a sleeper/stealth car I guess.
