Press lock once for deadlock, press it again quickly to keep the car locked without the deadlock. That's my understanding of it, although never tested it. You should be able to hear if they're used or not as the deadlocks are quite loud.

    Hi all,

So, I'm coming up to 45k kilometers and have been meticulously checking my engine oil every 5,000 (the oil in the Evo gets changed at those intervals).

Alas, something unusual has happened. From 0-15k and 15-30k the oil levels were usually very good, minimal consumption and the services were flawless.

Just recently, i hit 43k and i had noticed the low level engine oil light pop on when i started her to go home from work (granted i didn't check what it looked like at 40k but did look at it when it was serviced @30 and appeared to be fine) Promptly turned her off and had a look at the dipstick which was very low (almost below the line). So i pulled out the spare oil VW gave me when i first purchased the car and proceeded to fill her up with about a litre of engine oil.

Taking her for a full inspection this week but I tried my best searching this thread and others and wanted to know A) has anyone else experienced this? B) is it normal (according to a VW service department in Sydney, they've said 500ml-1L is quite normal) i tend to think this is a bit of an anomaly as it had not happened previously and a litre is a lot...

Other things to note is that there has been no oil spill below the car in the driveway nor in my parking bay at work so i have difficulty believing that it is a leak...

Would love some comments or advice! Very much appreciated!

Sadly this is normal for these engines, they are known for high oil consumption due to the soft rings on the pistons and clearances. Get used to putting up to and over 1 litre of oil between services. If you have broken the engine in almost perfectly then the oil consumption is reduced significantly down the track but you dont hear of many that dont consume oil.
    VAG FTW.

Reg. the oil leak, could be due to the rubber seal on the oil filter housing being not lined up properly... happened to me once, maybe check where it is leaking from.

I don't use much oil. Up to 42k now but haven't checked in a bit. For my engine I was told it uses more oil the more you use the turbo. I tend to just use the supercharger. perhaps the summer weather is having an effect?

have not observed any oil consumtion with the chain drive engines (I had a 1.4 TSI and Mk6 GTI) Though my TT with the EA113 belt driven cam uses about 1 litre per 5000km. (since switching to Shell oil. was about 1l per 300km before)

Can anyone tell me if the subtle whistle sound you hear under boost with the drivers window down is normal? The one i took for a test drive i had the window up, so didn't hear it (and can't hear it with mine with the windows up). I guess as it is a pretty highly strung turbo, the computer is controlling the pressures out to the waste gate all the time, as i hear it under both mild and foot to the floor boost.
I can't seem to get a rapid hit in first gear foot to floor, unlike in my WRX where it would push and push till it hit the rev limiter, the golf R seems like it is holding back sometimes, yet other times under half throttle and in 2nd gear, it feels better than full throttle often does.. I can't quite put my finger on it yet as to why it has such a variable feel..

    Hi Tony,

The R's have a really dumbed down first gear all set in the drive by wire area. Many put this down to turbo lag but its actually drive by wire delay at part throttle and probably another parameter. If you request say 60 percent throttle the laggish feeling is less pronounced as the throttle plate will move to the specified position at a faster rate but part throttle its very sad. I haven't played much with the DBW maps much myself - yet but I can't see any that affect delay even though I know they are there...somewhere. I can alter the relative positions providing the equivalent of a sprintbooster bit its still not a perfect solution. It may all be to reduce shock on the drivetrain or something else I'n not really sure
The turbo itself is a very responsive twin scroll beast with a turbine thats a bit too small (for even better response) and if you see the dyno runs they have a very linear power delivery not peaky at all, the later model Rexes do this too. Whistling is normal as are some blowoff style sounds
A Quick remap from anyone and your faith will be restored.

I recognise that user name of yours from the various rex forums, some others and even Yahoo groups from last century

    Cheers

    Mark

A SprintBooster attachment would also help here.

I don't think so to be honest. When it says "if you routinely mash the throttle to the floor, Sprint Booster may not be for you.".... I am always doing this. What I am finding is mashing to the floor in 1st (I have a manual, not DSG) is not the kind of performance I would expect. If I half throttle it, sometimes it feels better! It is almost like it is sensing I am hitting the floor with the pedal, and saying "nup, the engine has only done 500kms, we aren't going to let you have it all... yet". Completely nothing like the feel from the WRX. Admittedly the WRX is 160kW + some mods+lighter (and no funky diffs or electronics to get in the way), but I am a bit underwhelmed at times, and very satisfied other times, and I have no idea why it feels so variable!
