if i had a road car with sequential (dsg) on the stick id be trying to see if i could get the solenoid/electronics changed around so it was how it should be. is the DSG left down & right up on the paddles?
I'm not sure about the MkVI but on my V GTI, there is a column of numbers showing the gears engaged on MFD, so intuitively, down means down too.

My 2 cents.
I find I change down multiple gears more than I do up Eg. 7th to 5th or 4th etc. For me flicking the stick downwards is an easier and quicker motion than pushing up. Handy if I'm dropping gears to achieve an instant boost of power to fit into a gap or something alike.

I'm even worse off. When I drive my FPV I pull back to change up and push fwd to change down (the correct way), then when I get in the R its the other way around (the wrong way). Now i get confused when I switch between cars.......nice problem to have though and the paddle shift helps when I drive the the R but no such help in the FPV.
If there was a way to change the shift direction in the R I would be at the front of the stampeding crowd who would get this mod done

Well, it might just have to be a case of letting VW know.
The DSG transmission selector is not a physical connection to the gearbox. It is handled electronically, so VW should be able to swap things around by software. It would be great of all you had to do was take the selector out and swap two cables around, but doing it by software would be just as easy.
By all means leave it as it is by default, just give owners the ability to swap it around.
+1 for me too!
It seems that you can remove the covers around the selector and change the contacts or wires around... I have seen it done. You then need to swap the + / - label/light around too - which I don't think is a pretty job. Either way... it's not going to be covered by warranty if you mess something up.
Instead, I just got better DSG paddle shifters
+1 but don't start that one again. You know how our learned mod feels about that and of course is always right.
Add the handbrake to the list too. it should be on the driver's side of the console. Indicators. wipers, handbrake - my Forester has them all in the correct place and feels more intuitive and better for it compared to my Golf.

I like Euro-style left blinker& cruise/right wiper. It means I can keep my right hand on the wheel & use the left hand for gearchanges, indicating, flicking cruise on/off, advancing to the next song on the MP3 player & adjusting volume on the HU.
While it is nice that the wife has now bought a Mondeo with a similar Euro control layout, I didn't have a huge issue with adapting to her Auss/Jap style controls on her Commodore or the Camry she had for the last 2 weeks. Even she doesn't have a problem adapting.
Maybe I adapt quicker because I used to drive 10-20 unfamiliar cars a day?
carandimage The place where Off-Topic is On-Topic
I used to think I was anal-retentive until I started getting involved in car forums
Please don't get into it again.
Some members think that just because they're posting their rational opinion, that everyone else will change their opinion to match. When that didn't happen, some members then resorted to throwing personal insults at anyone who wasn't agreeing. There was already two attempts at this line of topic - once in one of the GTI or R threads, and then in its own separate topic, where people were warned to be nice... and it still turned nasty.
So just agree to disagree. Some people prefer it on the left, for the exact reason you mention in your first paragraph brad. Some people like it on the right because they can't see the rational/logic/practicality in what you're saying/are used to it being on the right.
