I can see some logic in the way it is arranged because in a standard automatic transmission, to manually select a lower gear you pull the shift lever back, and to manually select a higher gear, you push the shift lever forward. This would appear to be why it has been chosen that way.
That said, it is the exact opposite to what one would expect for a "clutch-pedal-less" manual where you might expect to pull the lever back to go up a gear and push it forward to go down a gear, but then that's you and me (at least)![]()
The story goes when Porsche made tip-tronic, they thought that the bimbo blonde women that would be purchasing it wouldn't understand the logic behind having it the correct way (back for up, forward for down), so they put it the wrong way (forward for up, back for down). Now we're stuck with having it the wrong way around... boo![]()
I've always found the DSG up/down orientation on the GTI to make perfect sense to me.
Going down a gear mimics a 5-4 or 3-2 downshift which happens more often than say 6-5 or 4-3 on a track
pull back for up & forward for down is the right way for sequential boxes especially if ya racing goes with the flow of g-forces.
