I'm just wondering if when the R's power was reduced to 188kw for Oz that this has affected the DSG. This is not turbo lag, it just doesnt have power in the 4th 5th gear....
Is the problem that D is holding too high a gear. Or that you feel the car has no power even in the correct gear?

I agree that D always holds too high a gear. But if you use manual mode to get it in the right gear the car has plenty of power right?

similar, no, feels exactly the same as when with a standard tranny you shift too soon, theres no power. only difference is there is no rattle coming from the GB.... The car is in 5th gear at 45ks, if you try to excelerate, there is nothing there, I'd go as far to say there is a strain on the engine when going 45 in 5th gear. Granted I can down shift with paddle, but I'm not there yet in my routine. Besides I don't think I should have to consider paddles to get the car moving. and as far as fuel economy goes, i really don't think holding the gearing lower for that period is going to make much if any difference. you could hardly call the R fuel efficient, good grief!!! used half a tank going 175 ks yesterday.. but had an absolute ball in the hills. In the wet the black performed without a hitch, never once did I feel even close to the edge.... very impressive.

Yep, I and many others have complained about this. It's just how it's programmed, they've taken a performance car and programmed the gearbox so it feels like a 90TSI. I use manual for 90% if my driving now, get some aftermarket paddles, makes it much easier.

Will , sounds like a real concern Will, I had dismissed it as it was a grumbling about the place but it appeared most had adjusted to it or it sorted itself out. I must admit when I test drove it ( and that was a couple of hours ) I never noticed it being pronounced. Is it just in certain situations it presents..?

this discussion may have been lost in the crash...we've talked about this issue before, will be the last time i raise, as it is not a concern to others and/or the black has a small problem, either way I'm taking up forum space on a known issue.
more pronounced in heat, but 5th gear at 45ks isn't right. you wouldn't/shouldn'd shift a Standard tranny to fifth gear at 45ks... there is no power, it must put strain on the engine.
also HPSOV, I may be missing something but when you refer to manual mode, what do you mean? there is no manual mode in the r. If I use the paddles the car remains in that gear for 10 seconds but will take over after that period if no further shifting is done. There is no switch to go into manual mode, that I'm aware....
    Guys really appreciate your input.

I'll finish with the biggest negitive I've found with the car. Suppose all Golfs have this issue.... THE REVERSE LIGHT IS ABOUT 2AMPS and on the opposite side as the driver... and if thats the worst I can find, it shows what a fantastic car the R is. Even if Top Gear Oz didn't rate it at all, but its a $#@# show anyway...

When the Shifter is in D - move it to the left to enter manual mode. You can then push the shifter up/down to change gears, or use the paddles, which will hold the gear as long as you like (unless you stop - it'll go to 1st by itself).

In D mode my TSI will use 7th gear at speeds as low as 50kph. If I want power I just push on the throttle harder and it'll drop to 4th or 5th. If I really want power, I'll engage Sport mode and accelerate and within 2 seconds my speed has increased by around 30kph (that's with the APR tune).

weewilly- not to bring the subject up for discussion again, but IMO the reason for the quick up shifting in D is to get low fuel consumption numbers... so they can publish 8.7L/100km and compete with the other car makers, not fair on the driver though!

The only little thing that bothers me with my R is when i close the sunroof I can never tell if the dial is at the centre/closing position. Couldn't they make a pronounced click or something? every time i use it i have to bring my head to the centre to see if it aligns. Otherwise... very happy

+1, I must look like a complete tool every time I close it and swing my head down in some weird movement to look up and see if it's aligned properly in the right position
