So just thinking of down the track a bit. I've mentioned before that it would have been nice if the R had some nice big brakes like a set of brembos etc (I recall some R having them?). Or even a factory option would have been nice, even Holden are doing it on their new commodores. The stockers are ok, but not sure if they'll hold up to repeated hammering like track days etc.

I notice APR does 2 types of brembo kits (not sure of price) and the Stg3 R uses Alcons so not sure if that is a kit they're selling or a one off for the dev car. Doubt there are any other local options as yet but anyone know of any kits from O/S and ballpark pricing?

The brake kits I'm aware of are:
Brembo or Alcon from APR/Harding Performance (and others).
    Volkswagen Racing from Rennenhaus
There is also a whole selection of kits from companies such as ECS Tuning.
Plus using OEM parts from "bigger sister" cars such as Audi, Porsche, Lambo etc.

From what I've seen, any decent kit locally starts at about $3k and goes up from there.

There's a big brake kit thread about this subject a little while back.

Keep in mind, if you change your brakes, you MUST have your car engineered as it is one of those items specifically listed as requiring engineering review to ensure the safety and road worthiness of your car. For QLD peoples it costs about $180 to have that done. At the time no one cared enough to investigate the costs for other states.

But as you noted, where the larger brake kits are most beneficial is for repeated stopping on the track. Hence why I guess no one was bothered to investigate the engineering costs for other states....

My Mk V GTI has a stage 1 tune and it pulls like a freight train from 2.5k rpm and never fails to impress. I’m contemplating also getting a stage 1 tune for my Golf R and would like to know if people who have already had the tune have noticed any reduction in turbo lag below 3k rpm?

Would a stage 1 tune and down pipe for the R offer similar low rpm performance to a GTI with just a stage 1 tune?

If the downpipe (and cat) is worthwhile, then you'll actually be running a stage 2 tune. The increased flow which of a good downpipe and cat means the turbo spool is increased greatly, so the answer should be yes. There are very few people put there with Stage II R's already though... the only forum member I'm aware of is Fab_R, and not sure if he driven a Stage I GTI previously.

That does look good too, however the reflections of the showroom lights give it a "chicken pox" or a "flock of seagulls with bowel trouble flew by" look :p

Hmm yeh I remembered that thread, but was a while ago. Was hoping there would be a bit more info now. I'll look into it early next year if they're needed.
